Meridian reduces
pickup of trash
to once a week
MERIDIAN — Twice -a -week
trash service, normally provided
from June 1 to Sept. I each year, was
eliminated by the Meridian City
Council Monday night. Trash will be.
collected weekly year-round.
The action included a commitment
by the council to study'a 9.4 percent
fee increase by Sanitary Service Inc.
The study would include looking into
the possibility of a flat rate for unlim-
ited weekly trash service with dis-
counts to senior citizens.
If the original rate hike submitted
by company spokesman Willard
Rowley were approved, the increase
would mean the 2,000 homes in Mer-
idian would pay $2.90 per month, or a
25 -cent monthly increase. That rate
is for once -a -week curbside trash ser-
vice for one can of trash per home,
Rowley said. If additional cans are
picked up, an extra 40 -cent charge is
levied.
Councilmen Grant Kingsford and
Bill Brewer said they favored a dis-
count for senior citizens.
"They get it (discounts) every-
where else, I don't know why we
couldn't offer it," Kingsford said.
One resident, Gene Kindred, said
he opposed the reduction of service
to once a week because "the grass
season is on" and residents will be
putting out additional trash. Kindred
later volunteered to serve on a joint
committee with Kingsford to study
the proposed rate increase and make
a recommendation to the city.
Rowley cited inflation and in-
creased gasoline costs as reasons for
the rate increase.

Two new ordinances were passed during the fission and will

As a resident within the City limits of Meridian, it will
be necessary for you to avail yourself of the City Trash Hauling
services, effective July 1, 1969. The Charges will appear on
your July Statement.
It will be necessary for you to provide yourself with a fly -
tight galvanised can with lid (not over 32 Gal. Cap.) and place
it on the street edge or contact the trash hauler for carry out
charges.
If you place your can along the street, the charges will be
$1.45 per month.
To have the trash hauler carry out from the house, it will
be $1.95 or more depending on the distance carried. This should
be arranged with the hauler by calling 888-2390.
The above number can be called to find out the pick-up days.
Sincerely yours
Herald J. Cox

Gentlemen:
This letter is directed to you for consideration of changes
necessary for the trash hauling services.
Firstly, I propose that the twice-a-week service,be forthe
months of June, July and August only. This would help with
the problem of labor which would allow me to use the college
students during their vacation. These are also the hottest
months of year.
Secondly, that the rates for the trash hauling be set effeot;Lve
April 1, 1978 as follows:
1. Basic Rate $2.65 per month
2. Extra Can (signed for) 1.00 per month
3. Extra Container .40 per pickup
4. Extra Service 1.50 per month
It has been my pleasure to work with the City of Meridian
these past 30 years, come this September, and I hope our '
relationship can continue for many years to come.
Sincerely yours,
