BY THE CITY COUNCIL: BIRD, BORTON, ROUNTREE, WARDLE
AN ORDINANCE AMENDING TITLE 7, CHAPTER 1, SECTION 8, MERIDIAN
CITY CODE REGARDING MAKING U-TURNS WITHIN THE CITY OF
MERIDIAN; AND PROVIDING FOR A WAIVER OF THE READING RULES
AND PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF MERIDIAN, IDAHO:
Section 1: That Title 7, Chapter 1, Section 8, Mt::riuian City Cuue is hereby
amended to read as follows:
7-1-8: U-TURNS:
A. Restrictions: No V tam or mm reversil'lg the direction of travel shall be made at any
intersection in which "l-To V Turn" signs Me ereeted, nor at any intersection at which
there is a traffic signal light, nor at any place other than at an intersection, nor unless
there be sufficient space to make sueh tlH"l'l without backing, nor unless prior to and
during sueh turn, the same be sigaaUed in the mann.er req1:lirod by state law.
A. Restrictions:
1) No V-turn or turn reversing the direction oftravel shall be made:
a) at any intersection in whieh "No V-Turn" signs are erected. Bar
b) at any intersection at wbieh thoce is a traffic sigaalligltt, l'lor
b) in a designated "No passing" zone; or
c) within a "School Zone" as defined bv the Meridian City Code; or
ill. at any place other than at an intersection, net' unless there be sufficient space to
make such turn without backing or impeding traffic, ftef-and of not less than five
hundred (500) feet of roadwav with a clear and unobstructed view bv drivers from
either direction. a proper signal is made. and said turn can be performed safely.
B Partial U Turn: It shall be illegal for any turn to be made eommeneing from the lane
of traffie il'l v/hieh a vehicle is moving which crosses the opposite !raffie lane and
which results in said vehicle parking or coming to a stop on-the-opposite side of the
street from where the mrn eOmnlefleea. (Ord. 507, 6 6 1989)
For the purposes of this ordinance "safely" shall mean that the party making the V-
turn or turn reversing the direction of travel shall be responsible to establish that this

maneuver can be made with due care to drivers and pedestrians at. adiacent to. or
upon the roadway and with due care in regards to the current conditions ofthe
roadway and driving conditions. It shall be unlawful to impede traffic with this
driving maneuver.
Section 2:
That pursuant to the affirmative vote of one-half (1/2) plus one (1)
of the Members of the full Council, the rule requiring two (2) separate readings by title
and one (1) reading in full be, and the same is hereby, dispensed with, and accordingly,
this Ordinance shall be in full force and effeet upon its passage, approval and publication.
