(n) a gathering place, a sense of community, a valuable community space to develop area commerce for agriculture, retail, information resources and family activities. Revitalization... (n) bringing again into activity and prominence; "the revival of trade';- "a revival of a neglected downtown';' "the Gothic revival in architecture ". One project...achieves two goals_ The Meridian Farmers Market'rM (MFM) began efforts in 2005 as a small family run operation to build a special event site located in the heart of Old Downtown Meridian, Idaho with two goals in mind. Goal # 1: provide a "Community Gathering Place" for area residents and a Direct Marketing space for smaller area farms and food-business entrepreneurs interested in building their agri-based businesses. Local artisan crafters also display their handmade items, plus, there's a showcase for Meridian's K-12 visual/performing arts students, professional entertainers and musicians. Goal #2: assist the City of Meridian in revitalizing the Old Downtown area of Meridian far families to once again enjoy the City's Heart, Home and Hub philosophy- Located in the Farmers &. Merchants Bank parking lot behind City Hall the Market provides area residents easy access to enter on all four sides and park within steps of our vendor booths. To separate itself from other competitors, MFM pioneered a unique approach over other Market venues Nationwide by providing its vendors with a new 10x10 canopy, plus 6' banquet table clothed and skirted. In order for the Market to be competitive with other Market venues we would like the City to: 1.) Consider approving alternative compliance (or "acceptance" if this is not proper zoning terminology) far our on~site storage unit as a necessary and un-obtrusive accessory to the markets weekly operation. On site storage and the need to haul canapies, tables and chairs to the Market each week for 40 vendors would increase manpower hours and be toa costly and very prohibitive. Wear and tear on canopies, tables and chairs would also be doubled each week with loading and unloading from storage to trailer to site every week. Considerate of the current restricted parking/drive-thru access of the former FMSB drive-thru teller lane and our storage units set back location, we feel it is an un obtrusive structure that blends in with existing structures. Our tout is similar to the size and placement of the storage unit located at Mason's Sports Bar & Grill on Main Street. The main difference between Mason's and ours is the secluded nature of ours from public view. By having our unit on site the Market is set up and ready for business by the MFM event crew before any vendors have arrived each week and then the items ate stored upon closing with little to no added costs. The Saturday morning work crew consists of young men and women with special needs. Since its inception MFM has been able to work with these young people from Meridian and assist in turning them into being more productive citizens. 2.) Consider approving altemative compliance (or "acceptance" if this is not proper zoning terminology) far our need of are portable toilet with separate self-contained washbasin as a Meridian Fanners Market""' and the Meridian Fam~ers Market'"' logo are trademarks and/or registered trademarks of Pro Impact Marketing, LLC. Copyright ~ 2006 Meridian Farmers Market, All Rights Reserved. needed accessory for vendors and consumers to use while at the Market. The toilet and washbasin is serviced and maintained weekly for proper sanitation and to insuxe zi!o issues with odor. The portable toilet unit also allows for storage of the washbasin inside the toilet of which has a lockable door- We are exploring a way to cover the unit after the Market closes to be un-obtrusive during weekdays and yet still be accessible on Monday morning's after the Market for weekly maintenance and cleaning. During the 2005 season a brand new unit was in place as will be this year. The current arrangement is the same as last year, which posed na complaints by businesses or residents regarding health, odor or lack of proper hygiene and maintenance. The Market does not want to have vendors or consumers impose on area businesses for restroom use during their operating hours atad the Market season. A seasonal agreement of on~site maintenance and no removal is less than 1/4 of cost of moving the unit in and out each week. Due to these exorbitant costs of delivering and removing the station each week and considerate of no City, State or Federal backed funding for operations, we are requesting an on-site allowance of this as a much needed accessory during the Markets Season of May thru October. It should be duly noted we have changed the operatiort of our Market this year to a Not for Profit 501(c)3 status to pursue much need City, State and Federal graxxts to grow our enterprise and assist in Old Downtown revitalization, Since first opening in 2005, the Market has served the Meridian community well as a "Weekly Community Gathering Place". It has assisted over 25 farm/food-related businesses, which have accessed the site for weekly direct marketing services. In 2D06 the theme is "Double the Fun" with more vendors, special faanily events anal every changing entertainment. To accomplish this, MFM has forged valuable alliances with the University ofldaho, Food Tech Center, Meridian Joint School District Z#2, Farmers & Merchants Banlry Washington Savings Bank, Meridian Development Corp., Meridian Boys & Girls Club, Meridian Parks ~ Rec. Dept., Meridian Fire Dept and Meridian Police .Dept. (Nate; See attached letters of endorsement) The Market starts in early May and runs through late October every Saturday from Sam to lpm. The event Iocation sits directly behind Meridian's Gity Hall in the Farmers & Merchants Bank (FMSB) parking lot. There is a FREE "Kid Smarts" Craft/Play Zone located in the Washington Savings Bank parking lot adjacent to FMSB for young families to enjoy. The "Good Morning Treasure Valley radio show heard on AM 670 KBOI broadcasts LIVE at the Market the first of every month from Sam to gam. Thank you for your consideration, William H. These interactions are particularly important iz>. communities like Meridian that axe experiencing unimaginable growth -- from a population in 1990 of 9,596 to a projected population of over 70, 000 by the end of this year. Direct mazketing venues are critical to the survival of family-owned farms and specialty food producers. The Meridian Farmers' Mazket has been a valuable addition to our local network and we fully support its bid for FMPP giant funding. With your support, the market will be able to pilot several innovative concepts ideally suited for replication across the country. On the demand side, the Meridian Mazket has quickly filled a void in Idaho's fastest growing city. Until its founding last season, local people had no easy access to fresh produce and specialty foods. They can now commute by car, bike or foot to afamily-friendly environment. The Market's arrival has helped breathe new life into the city's downtown district and will continue to do so with its inevitable growth. Its plan for shuttle service will extend market access to seniors, handicapped and others unable to attend previously. On the supply side, the arrival of the Meridian Mazket added a great option far vendors of fresh produce and specialty foods. More than fifty enterprises use our commercial kitchen and Meridian has afforded them access to a customer base willing and able to pay fair market price for their goods. Meridian's flat-fee policy and its willingness to allow vendors to co-op space have enabled vendors to improve their financial position. Meridian holds great promise fox xnazket gazdenexs and food vendors from newly azrived immigrant populations from Eastern Europe, Sudan and Mexico. I am fully confident that Meridian can maximize the impact of FMPP fiulding. Bill Egner is an innovative marketer who knows how to leverage advertising dollars. He is adept at forging alliances and has already begun securing the commitments to sustain FMPP-funded initiatives. Our focus is to reach potential customers in the Nampa, Caldwell and Meridian areas as we believe them to be underserved in catering and nutrition services. The Market's support of local vendors and the emphasis on Idaha Preferred businesses was our incentive to exhibit our company at this venue. With their support we were able to reach clientele that otherwise might not hear about our company until it was much further along in its development. As a catering business we pride ourselves on using Idaho foods in our meal preparation whenever possible. We found the quality and value of fellow vendors' products to be such that we now feature a local salad dressing as our dressing of choice. The ease with which my potential nutrition and catering clients have access to me as a dietitian during the market has helped us tremendously. I have found myself doing on- the-spot consultations for people who have pressing nutrition concerns-something that provides my customers needed information and myself repeat business. Our customer base of people who have special diet needs has led us to an entirely new market we had not anticipated when opening our doors. This would not have happened had we not had the flexibility and location of the Meridian Farmer's Market. The vision and excitement we see in the Market's management is the reason we have readily signed on to participate in the 2006 season. I fully endorse the Grant Request from several different perspectives: as a participating farmers' market vendor, a local resident of 46 years, an owner ofa specialty foods production company and an active advisory board member of the Idaho State Department of Agriculture's Idaho Preferred Program. My Company has utilized the farmers' market venues in Idaho for 18 of the 20 years we have been in business. Originally the "farmers' markets" were informally operated and the easiest venue to introduce new food products to the public. In the 1990's we actively participated in the now very successful Capital City Market located in Boise for 6 years. For the past 2 years we had been looking at other markets in the region, specifically to the west of Boise where growth was the greatest. The Meridian Farmers' Market has filled the need in this area, along with being operated with a more vendor friendly format; it is located in the center of the fastest growing area in the State of Idaho. In just one year this market was more successful in customer attendance, and vendor satisfaction, than several other area markets that have been in operation from 3 to 5 years. When the Meridian Market opened last summer we immediately determined that this location was demographically the best to reach the newest residents in the Treasure Valley area. Over the 6 months of the market last year our projections and expectations were exceeded. We feel that this is the best location for a market in the area; along with the support of the City of Meridian it can only become more successful in the future. Based upon the first year it is clear that this farmers' market will lead to developing an environment of rejuvenation to the downtown area of Meridian, while maintaining ties to the original agricultural heritage of the area. We endorse any project that will assist the Meridian Farmers' Market in creating a stronger presence in the Treasure Valley area. The purpose of developing this marketing entity was to promote the retail produce sales of Max Farms and its affiliates. These include many local vegetable and fruit growers throughout Idaho. The Meridian Farmer's Market is the only Farmers' Market that Eat Right Idaho will be participating in. Last year, Eat Right Idaho participated in two other local farmers' markets. However, after reviewing these farmers markets, in comparison to the Meridian Farmers' Market, we feel confident that the Meridian Farmer's Mazket will be the most beneficial market for us to participate in. It is our intent with this letter to express our firm belief in the potential that this mazket has due to its location and management techniques. We consider it to be a major partner in the Eat Right Idaho program and as such, it will strongly benefit not only Max Farms, but all of its partner companies as well. Being able to sell our locally grown produce at a retail price direct to the consumer is critical to the success of Max Farms and many other local small vegetable and fruit producers. We strongly ask for your diligent consideration in regards to supporting the Meridian Farmer's Market. I would be more than happy to answer any questions you may have.
