Subject:Proposed Kingstown development in Meridian

To the Honorable Mayor Simison, the Meridian City Council, and the Meridian Planning and Zoning officers:
We are writing to you not to oppose growth, which is inevitable, but to ask that growth be thoughtful and
moderated. We are fully aware that Meridian needs more housing ~ specifically more affordable housing.
However, the location of the proposed Kingstown infill development (in the very center of the block
encompassed by Eagle Road to the east, Ustick to the south, Locust Grove to the west, and McMillan to the
north) is inappropriate for the type of densely populated subdivision now being planned by the developer.
My neighbor Malissa Bernard has gone into detail in her emails to you ~ I do not need to repeat what she has
already said, other than to say that the Kingstown sub needs to be less dense. As planned, the density is much,
much greater than that of the neighboring subdivisions that will have to bear the brunt of the Kingstown
traffic: Alpine Pointe, Champion Park, and Settlers Bridge. Logically, density should be on the outer edges of a
city block, where all of the traffic can be quickly shunted out onto the main roads. Instead, the Kingstown
developer proposes to fill the very center of this one-square-mile block with dense housing, and it follows that
equally "dense" traffic will accompany it. It defies logic. We are asking that Meridian Planning and Zoning and
the Meridian City Council approve a development that will more closely match the existing densities ~ not one
that will fill the center of the area with dense housing.
The issues with traffic have been taken up with ACHD, but we would like to reiterate that traffic-calming
measures will be needed throughout the "cut-through subdivisions" if this dense development is approved as
currently written, and we would appreciate having such traffic-calming measures mandated if and when
Kingstown is approved. Let us please be proactive and not reactive when it comes to safety ~ speed humps,
stop signs, and decreased subdivision speeds should be put in place now, so that we needn't wait for accidents
to happen before taking action. It's important that local traffic be kept local. We are resigned to that fact that
there will always be some cut-through traffic in any subdivision, but there's no reason why we cannot
anticipate problems and meet them head on ~ rather than waiting for accidents to happen.
As the application currently stands, we strongly suggest that it not be approved.
Thank you for your time.
