Motion passed. 3. Brainstorming Community Art Party Event, Friday September 9, 2022 - ~ with Renee White, Special Events Coordinator Ms. White gave an overview of the Community Block Party and its purpose in the past, which was to connect the public to the Meridian Parks and Recreation activities instructors and to participating vendors. She explained that, throughout the years, the percent of commercial presenters and vendors had increased, and the goal for 2022 is to make it more about a celebration of the arts, in conjunction with the Art Week sponsored by the Meridian Arts Commission. Because the participation of the Boise Philharmonic was postponed last year, the funds will be used for the September date, instead. Participating businesses and organizations included Angry Easel and the Colossal Collective, which did puppet shows including interaction with the children in the audience. Dunkley Music was going to sponsor an instrument petting zoo last year, but it was cancelled due to rain. Ms. White asked the committee for feedback and coordination of the Community Block Party with the September 2022 Art Week. She explained the budget would be provided 100% by sponsors, so a clear vision needs to be formulated. The committee discussed activities of Art Week from last year, such as the Treasure Valley Children’s Theater doing a presentation for the Meridian Arts Foundation Art Sip Fundraiser, which will be Thursday this year. A 25- minute play could be performed on Thursday, and a longer play could be performed Saturday Afternoon. One idea presented was to have the TVCC open for Concerts on Broadway. Another idea was to include the Huckleberry Star Theater group. To encourage movement of people from the activities in Kleiner Park to the activities in downtown Meridian, a traveling man idea was presented. Another idea to connect the Art Week Activities in downtown Meridian to the Block Party Activities in Kleiner Park was to include entertainment along Fairview Avenue, which connects the two locations, such as a busker festival, where attendees are given six votes and can vote for their favorite entertainers. Art Walk was not included in the Art Week Activities last year, but the committee discussed including the Art Walk in the September 2022 Art Week Activities, both visual and performing artists. The committee discussed doing the Community Block Party on Friday and the Art Week Activities on Saturday. Asking the Meridian Market artisans if they would like to also show their work at the Community Block Party on Friday was also suggested, and the committee discussed putting out a call to vendors for the Art Week events. The committee discussed using signage in both Kleiner Park and downtown Meridian advertising the other event. The chalk art competition is usually done on Saturday Morning in downtown Meridian. The committee discussed having musicians or vocalists in Generations Plaza during the chalk art competition. Including musicians at the Kleiner Band Shell, especially diverse groups with music and dance from diverse backgrounds was also discussed. The idea of taking a time lapse video of the chalk art competition was discussed. Including an opportunity for community art was discussed. Ideas presented included rock mosaics, sand art, sand castles, and a flag or quilt (textile art) to represent Meridian. Ms. White asked the subcommittee to continue to send its ideas to her for connecting the two events as a celebration of the arts. Art Week will be September 7 to 10. 4. Discuss Other Art Week Activities and Plans The committee discussed the free classes, sponsored by the Meridian Art Commission, provided at last year’s Art Week and events during the week for this year. The Meridian Arts Commission paid for materials and instructor payment for the classes. The Meridian Library unBound location will have a class Saturday at 10:00. The Initial Point opening will be September 8. The Parks and Recreation art party will be held on Friday, and the chalk art competition will be Saturday morning at Generations Plaza. Concerts on Broadway will be Saturday Evening, and that is when Tammy DeWeerd’s arts awards will be announced. Classes discussed for this year included song writing, poetry writing, poetry out loud, line dance, rhythm and movement, improv theater, song writing, and flower arranging. Both flower arranging and song writing were popular classes last year. 5. Mayor's Awards in the Arts: Review, Discuss, and Update 2019 Call for Nominations and Discuss Marketing of Call The subcommittee reviewed the 2019 Call for Mayor Tammy DeWeerd’s Art Awards. One idea discussed was to have rotating zones each year for the student award and educator award, based on school zones, for the award recipients. The Excellence and Supporter awards nominations would not have to be from a particular school zone each year. A special selection committee with four commissioners to select the award winners was discussed. C. Schiffler will add a selection committee discussion to the next MAC agenda. 6. Updates: Concerts on Broadway The Concerts on Broadway bands have all been booked, including High Street, Soul Patch, Smooth Avenue. One idea discussed was to see if student artists in the Meridian Symphony Orchestra want to be opening acts for the Concerts on Broadway. Ms. Schiffler said she would talk to the legal department about past agreements for having student artist opening acts for Concerts on Broadway. The idea was discussed of having the Treasure Valley Children’s Theater do an opening act for one Concert on Broadway and having student artists do opening acts for two of the Concerts on Broadway. The keyboard the City owns was discussed. It has slow action, and Chairman Mauldin said she would speak to a music store about loaning the City a keyboard in exchange for promotion of the music store at the events. 7. Designate Subcommittee Representative to Report on Subcommittee Activity at Arts Commission Meetings Ms. Cavaness-Williams will be the subcommittee representative to report on subcommittee activity at art commission meetings. Adjournment Ms. Cavaness-Williams motioned to adjourn the meeting, Mr. O’Leary seconded. Motion passed. Meeting was adjourned at approximately 7:00 p.m.
