DISCUSSION ITEMS
2. Draft Outline for Art Week
C. Schiffler presented a draft of the Art Week outline, based on previous year’s activities
and projects. The Art Drop is one of the most popular activities. The free art classes run
Wednesday through Friday with 2-3 classes each day. Previous classes included: Swing
Dance, Treasure Valley Children’s Theater (an improv class), Happy Hour Homemaker,
How to Do Public Speaking (by Lizzie Taylor), How to Publish a Book, Painting (Angry
Easel), Middle Eastern Dance (Jenifer Cavaness-Williams), Flower Arranging (The Flower
Place), Dance Arts Academy, and Poetry. This year the Community Center will not likely be
available to us, as it is scheduled to be torn down, so we will have to consider location
options. Many of the classes ran at the businesses that sponsored them, or outside on the
City Hall plaza. This year the unBound Library expressed interest in hosing classes and
providing a class. The subcommittee will develop the proposed classes list in an upcoming
meeting. C. Schiffler has confirmed that the Meridian Art Foundation is planning their Art
Sip once again for the Thursday of Art Week. The Initial Point Gallery opening was changed
in previous years to be held during art week, and the Initial Point Gallery Subcommittee
proposed changing it once again, but wanted to confirm that the Art Sip might be
happening in concurrence with the opening, and tabled that decision for the Events and
Outreach Subcommittee to decide in order to best plan for Art Week activities. (This
decision can be found below in agenda item 5). The Community Art Party was planned for
the Friday of Art Week last year in partnership with Renee White, the Parks and Recreation
Event Coordinator). L. Mauldin liked the idea of having the Community Art Party again and
suggested bringing R. White in on future meetings if possible to coordinate planning. C.
Schiffler will coordinated scheduling and planning with R. White. The Chalk Art
Competition was held Saturday morning in Generations Plaza. The second concert in the
Concerts on Broadway series is scheduled for Saturday of Art Week. L. Mauldin confirmed
that the mayor’s awards were previously announced and given out at the Concert. New or
additional programming was mentioned: partnering with Main Street Market to provide
free booths for artists, doing a show with the Treasure Valley Children’s Theater (however,
the theater is also busy with programming at the Art Sip event), putting out a temporary
public art project, and presenting the Tammy de Weerd’s Awards in the Arts.
J. Cavaness-Williams suggested marketing to schools as they are a large population of Art
Week participants. It was suggested that the subcommittee ask schools to put
announcements on their boards and calendars. T. Vannucci inquired about any HOA lists. L.
Mauldin brought up the site, NextDoor.com. C. Schiffler stated that the advertising to HOAs
had come up in a Parks and Recreation meeting about advertising other materials, and that
the Marketing Coordinator had responded that there wasn’t a contact list, but that they’ve
had good success on Next Door. C. Schiffler will coordinate advertising with Shelly Houston,
the Parks and Recreation Marketing Coordinator.
L. Mauldin asked if a motion was needed. C. Schiffler stated that no motion was needed, as
everyone appeared to be in consensus about the proposed calendar draft, and this draft is
still a work in progress.
3. Discuss Logistics for Tammy de Weerd's Awards in the Arts: Advocate, Educator,
Artist, Student Artist
The subcommittee discussed the awards and categories: Advocate, Educator, Artist,
Student Artist. L. Mauldin expressed support for the separate categories of Advocate as
well as Educator. L. Mauldin asked about timeline and logistics for nominations. C. Schiffler
recommended advertising a call for nominations which would include a written letter of
support to help with verbal support for the awards at the award presentation. C. Schiffler
recommended an open call, with encouragement for the commissioners to also send
nominations for awardees. L. Mauldin said the mayor would need time to go through
applications. C. Schiffler expressed that the mayor preferred to have the awards be selected
by the Commission for recommendation to the Mayor. L. Mauldin inquired when the
nominations should be sent by in order to have time for the selection. C. Schiffler suggested
June or July, and will draft a call for nominations.
4. Discuss Treasure Valley Fine Arts Festival Potential Partnering
The Subcommittee discussed the partnership with the Treasure Valley Fine Arts Festival
and thought it was great idea overall. C. Schiffler recommended the judging of the show as
easy to achieve in terms in participation, and inquired whether the subcommittee felt that
they had the bandwidth to do the proposed booth including set up, materials, project,
manning the booth, and operating it during the festival hours. L. Mauldin stated that the
booth could be more of a visual presence, and the subcommittee could have a sign up sheet
for hours and some manning of the booth, but not be present the whole time. The inclusion
of marketing electronic and print materials and help with promotion of MAC and the
TVFAF was recommended. C. Schiffler will communicate this with the festival director.
ACTION ITEMS
5. Approve Date Change of Gallery Opening Reception to Thursday September 8th
during Art Week to Coincide with Meridian Art Foundation's Art Sip Event
T. Vannucci confirmed if the date change had been discussed with N. Schofield and other
Initial Point Gallery Subcommittee members. C. Schiffler confirmed that the date change
was not approved during the IPG meeting only because the subcommittee wanted to
confirm the Art Sip event date (C. Schiffler confirmed) and leave the reception date
planning up to the Events and Outreach subcommittee to plan when it would best work
with Art Week programming.
T. Vannucci made motion to approve the reception date change; seconded by J. Cavaness-
Williams.
