COMMISSION
Re: Discuss Potential Opportunity for Underrepresented Community Grants
Summary:
The National Park Service’s Underrepresented Community Grant Program (URC) works towards
diversifying the nominations submitted to the National Register of Historic Places. URC grants are
funded by the Historic Preservation Fund (HPF), and are administered by the NPS. Projects
include surveys and inventories of historic properties associated with communities
underrepresented in the National Register, as well as the development of nominations to the
National Register for specific sites. Grants are awarded through a competitive process and do not
require non-Federal match. Eligible applicants are limited to State Historic Preservation Offices,
Federally-recognized Tribes, Alaska Native Villages/Corporations, and Native Hawaiian
Organizations, and Certified Local Governments.

Call for Projects: 2021 HISTORIC PRESERVATION STUDENT COMPETITION
OVERVIEW:
The Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) is hosting a competition for students to encourage them to
explore the history of Meridian. We hope that the students involved will gain a better understanding of Meridian
and be able to communicate their experience as a Meridian resident.
Submissions will be categorized in elementary school, middle school, and high school groups, and an award
will be given to the student with the top score in each category. The awards will be $500 for the high school
student, $200 for the middle school student, and an annual family membership to Zoo Boise for the elementary
school student.
Submitted projects may be retained in our records and may be referenced in other program materials or
presentations. Student shall, and hereby does, expressly waive any and all right, title, or interest in the submitted
project. Student understands that this waiver includes waivers of the exclusive rights of repr oductions,
adaptation, publication, and display.
ELIGIBILITY:
This call is open to students regardless of race, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, nationality,
or disability. Submissions will be accepted from high school, middle school, and elementary school students.
PROPOSAL REQUIREMENTS:
Meridian students are invited to submit an Applications & Acknowledgements form and original project.
Projects could be formal essays, digital or multimedia projects, oral history, visual artwork, dioramas, etc.
These projects will be a response to one of the prompts below, according to the grade of the student.
Middle and High School Students Prompt: Historically, Meridian’s identity has centered around its booming
agricultural and dairy industry; however, in recent years, the agricultural and dairy industries have not
dominated Meridian as they once did. Meridian’s heritage will always be connected to its farms, fields, stock
shows, and dairy production but now Meridian is going through a transitory period. What is Meridian’s identity
today? What should residents and visitors know about Meridian?
To help you ponder these questions, imagine that you are 50 years in the future, writing a history book, giving a
tour, or creating an image of Meridian in 2021. How would you describe the Meridian that you experience
today to future generations? What do you think Meridian should be remembered for?
Elementary School Students Prompt: What is your favorite historical place to visit in Meridian? Why do you
think this place is important?
For a list of historical places you can visit, go to https://meridiancity.org/history/walkingtour/ or grab a map
from the Historic Walking Tour kiosks located in front of Meridian City Hall or in Generations Plaza in front of
Deja Brew.
Submissions must provide the following materials and information to HPC via email, mail, or hand delivered in
order to be considered for award:
• Completed, signed Application & Acknowledgements form; forms are available online at
https://meridiancity.org/history/competition or upon request via email.
8
Item 5.
• Completed project responding to the prompts above
DEADLINE:
To be considered, all materials must be received by HPC by 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, May 2, 2021.
SELECTION PROCESS:
The selection panel for the 2021 Historic Preservation Student Competition will be made up of HPC
Commissioners. The selection panel will score submissions based on the judging criteria listed below. HPC
will notify awardees by Friday, May 21, 2021. The students with the highest overall score in each category will
be awarded prizes. The minimum average score to be considered eligible for an award is 85 points.
AWARDED PROJECTS:
The City of Meridian will email a letter to the awarded students. The awards will be $500 for the high school
student, $200 for the middle school student, and an annual family membership to Zoo Boise for the elementary
school student. Students (or their guardians) will be asked to fill out a W-9 form to return to the City before
checks may be mailed.
