3. Determine Use for Old McFadden Sign
Lt. Leslie of the Meridian Police Department described a new scenario village being
constructed for police training and requested use of the old McFadden sign the
Commission has been storing. He also clarified that the sign will be restored and
used inside the facility.
J. Ault made a motion to allow the Police Department to use the McFadden sign,
seconded by J. Nary with the provision that if the Police Department no longer
needs the sign it is returned to the Commission.
All ayes
B. Johnston requested that Lt. Leslie send pictures of the finished product to the
Commission to use on their social media.
4. Discuss Projects for the CLG Grant Award
The Commission was awarded $5,000 from the State Historic Preservation Office
for a project other than the Meridian Speedway project. The Commission discussed
possible properties to do a new Intensive Survey on. Properties discussed included
Zamzows Mill and the Masonic Lodge in downtown Meridian. The Commission
also agreed that if possible, the funds should go toward TAG for the additional time
they spent on completing the information that SHPO requested on the Meridian
Intensive Survey.
5. Explore Scavenger Hunt Format for May Presentation Month
J. Nary introduced the content calendar she created for a scavenger hunt during
Preservation Month. The plan is to produce the scavenger hunt on any social
media platforms that are available- the Commission’s Facebook Group and/or the
City’s Facebook page. J. Evarts will add some national hashtags and stated that he
might be able to find businesses to partner with in downtown Meridian to use gift
cards as prizes.
REPORTS [ACTION ITEM]
6. Update: Social Media Efforts
J. Evarts explained to the commissioners what the social media efforts of the
Commission will look like and the first monthly post that the Commission will ask
to be posted on the City page. See below for explanatory slides and monthly post. J.
Nary encouraged all commissioners to be active on the group. J. Evarts and J. Nary
also expressed concern that other commissions had social media platforms that
the Historic Preservation Commission does not have access to. The issue will be
looked into.
7. Update: Student Initiative for Spring 2021
D. Hart gave a brief description of the outline for the upcoming student history
competition: there will be two prompts to divide older students and elementary
students, with prizes for elementary, middle, and high school students. B. Johnston
informed the Commission that in the past the commissioners have acted as the
selection panel. If there is a large quantity of submissions, the Commission may
seek more individuals for the selectin panel.
FUTURE MEETING TOPICS / DISCUSSION
At the next meeting, the Commission will discuss properties for the CLG grant and an
update on social media efforts and the student initiative.
NEXT MEETING: March 25, 2021
ADJOURNMENT

4. Preservation Month Planning for May 2021
The Commission discussed possible ways to celebrate Preservation Month in May
with consideration for the uncertainty of the pandemic public health precautions.
In the past, the commissioners have led groups along the historic walking tour
with some booths and refreshments at City Hall. The reservation for this kind of
activity would need to be in place by March. J. Nary suggested a scavenger hunt,
she even has some templates that could be adjusted and used. The scavenger hunt
could be interchangeable between a virtual activity to an activity for gathering.
The Commission agreed to go forward with the scavenger hunt idea. J. Nary will
present the scavenger hunt templates she has and the Commission will decide
dates at the February Commission meeting.
5. Next Steps for the 2021 Student Initiative
B. Johnston appointed D. Hart to head the Student Initiative for this year. The
Commission discussed how the initiative was held in years past- previously, the
initiative was opened for submissions in April and prize were awarded in May
during Preservation Month. This year, it was suggested that the initiative be open
for submissions earlier in order to be mindful of the extra load that many students
and teachers are carrying in the pandemic. Ideally, the student initiative will be
released in March. D. Hart and B. Fitzgerald will meet to continue the discussion.
REPORTS
6. Update: Social Media Subcommittee
A. Belnap updated the Commission on the guidelines the Social Media
Subcommittee has been given regarding the new Facebook page. The Commission
discussed the protocol to post something on the group- sending it to the Social
Media Subcommittee to put on the content calendar to be posted by City of

Meridian or posting it themselves on the page under their own profile. J. Nary
suggested that perhaps the Commissioners will do all the posting without relying
on a content calendar or admin rights. The Subcommittee will discuss this option
further, have a final Commission discussion in February, and roll out the plan in
March.
FUTURE MEETING TOPICS / DISCUSSION
The next meeting will include a report on the student initiative, social media plan, and
Preservation Month scavenger hunt presentation.
