Belnap informed the Subcommittee that the Parks & Rec Director, Steve Siddoway, and Special Events Coordinator, Renee White, have decided to eliminate the Community Block Party, the City event that typically takes place during Art Week. Instead R. White will be able to focus her efforts in building up Art Week. A. Belnap requested that the Subcommittee brainstorm ideas for Art Week activities that A. Belnap can then coordinate with R. White. The Subcommittee was pleased with the partnership, seeing it as an opportunity to expand art in Meridian and offered the following ideas:  Performers, dancing and/or singing  Large scale statues  Chalk art- artist designed, public participates  Chalk art competition  Art classes o Bob Ross-style virtual classes available  Tours (can be virtual) of hopefully completed murals o Artist engagement if held in person  Passport style public art scavenger hunt  Live art demonstrations  Virtual artist highlight  Art Walk Most of the ideas discussed are intended for the Saturday activities. For Wednesday- Friday activities, the Subcommittee agreed that expanding the art classes similar to last Art Week is the best idea. Although the classes were only semi-successful, it is difficult to know the direct factors that influenced limited participation (COVID-19 cautions, first week of online school, marketing, etc.) the Subcommittee would like to try again. The Subcommittee discussed at more length how to balance potentially two locations during Art Week: Downtown Meridian (the traditional space for Art Week) and Kleiner Park (the traditional space for Community Block Party). Discussions surrounded ways to bridge, connect, or transport participants between the locations. Possibilities included a tram or shuttle transport or partnering with a charity organization to do a walk/run between locations. The tram or shuttle could also do tours of public art around Kleiner Park and Downtown Meridian. A. Belnap will take these ideas to R. White and report back to the Subcommittee as planning progresses. REPORTS 3. Update: Possible 2021 Events & Activities Contributions to City Events Due to COVID-19 and the uncertainty on how/when safety guidelines will be lifted, A. Belnap did not have concrete news to share with the Subcommittee. The Subcommittee will take planning activities one step at a time and on a case-by-case basis. A. Belnap let the commissioners know that she is working with R. White on a Valentines virtual activity called “I heART Meridian” and is in an art-share format. In this activity, residents can create valentines and share them with specific individuals. Subcommittee members are encouraged to participate. NEXT MEETING - February 11, 2021 T. Vannucci informed the Subcommittee that he has been in contact with Don Burgess of Creative Integrity, a productions company. Don Burgess is prepared for a partnership and has created a booklet of possible ideas that we could use for holiday activities next winter. T. Vannucci inquired if the Subcommittee was interested in hearing from him. The Subcommittee confirmed and L. Mauldin invited D. Burgess to speak at the next meeting. ADJOURNMENT J. Discussion: Concerts on Broadway Band Needed on September 25 A. Belnap informed the Subcommittee that the Diamond Empire Band had a scheduling conflict and had to cancel their performance in the Concert on Broadway series on September 25. The commissioners suggested inviting a cultural group to perform on the September 25 such as a First Nation group, Basque, or mariachi band. The Subcommittee offered to let the Diversity Subcommittee find an appropriate group to invite to the Concert on Broadway series. 3. Discussion: Renee White Gives Feedback on 2021 Event Ideas • Unplug & Be Outside 2 Item 1. o R. White suggested that a n activity that could fit for Unplug and Be Outside would be to find arts-specific activities that could be offered ex: a line dancing class, tai-chi, or Basque singers/dancers • 4th of July o The Barbershop Quartet could be a fun addition to the Independence Day Festival • Movie Nights o R. White said a sing a long movie would be possible, it would just take some navigating with the licensing. We would also have to determine the best one for families, or do a mashup of sing along clips • Gene Kleiner Day o The Subcommittee’s original idea was an intercultural activity involving dance and music and R. White suggested that something related to Gene Kleiner would be best. Perhaps music from where he immigrated from. • Block Party o R. White though that a public participation activity, such as an artist designed chalk art to be colored in by passers by would be a delightful, perfect addition • Trunk or Treat o R. White described Trunk or Treat as an event that is wholly consumed by the attendee’s search for candy. Any performances or judging contests would be difficult to get attention for. Instead, R. White suggested an installation or sculpture for the scarecrow stroll A. Belnap will price check these ideas and update the Commission with the year’s possibilities as their next meeting. REPORTS 4. Update: Dickens Caroler Costumes L. Mauldin informed the Commissioners that renting costumes from Sun Valley is very difficult and she was advised to start from scratch in the creation of costumes rather than trying to adjust or alter rented costumes. 5. Update: Ornament Drop Activity The Ornament Drop will be the weekend of December 12-13 and Commissioners are encouraged to participate. L. Mauldin recommended that the commissioner note who they are on the art they drop off so that the community knows who they are. NEXT MEETING - January 14, 2020 ADJOURNMENT 3 Item 1. J.
