Project Design Standard Narrative
Mountain America Credit Union’s building program has consciously eschewed the institutional
demeanor that has historically characterized banking architecture. In its place, an architecture
derived from more hospitable and appealing antecedents was created that more closely
reflected the values of the typical member. The branch offices exemplify these principles by
alluding to domestic architectural traditions while remaining identifiable buildings of business.
Much attention was given to maintaining the safety of all individuals at these facilities. The
facilities have numerous windows in the public spaces to allow visibility both inside and outside
to deter criminal activity. The interiors are free of columns to allow a clear view for the manager
and multiple cameras placed throughout the facilities. The landscaping is designed to minimize
areas of potential hiding places.
The designs incorporate sustainable building technologies through the use of daylighting,
energy efficient glass, lighting controls, and exterior lighting that reduces night light pollution. It
employs an indigenous palette of materials including a natural stone and painting lap siding,
metal wall paneling, metal roofing on the elevated shed roof, and dark aluminum window
frames. The nearly one-acre site includes a paved area, intimate landscaping, lighting to match
the development, branding wall signage is located on each end of the shed roof that integrates
with the architecture, and pedestrian walkways around and through the site. The interiors utilize
finishes that evoke a warm and inviting work place.
