Ada County Drivers Services and Sheriff Sub-Station Building
Project Narrative
The purpose of this building is provide a second location for the residents of Ada County
to renew or obtain a State of Idaho driver’s license. A secondary function in this building
is to provide a small Ada county Sheriff sub-station where officers can perform paper
work tasks and review casework with fellow officers and or officials.

Design Narrative
COHESIVE DESIGN
The concept of the design is to complement the existing buildings on the site in design
and scale. To do this we have selected materials and massing that present compatible
design concepts. The materials proposed work well together and help reinforce the
massing concept of the different portions of the building. These massing elements
highlight the entry points and delineate the main entry point for the public to use. The
additional staff entry points are less pronounced and don’t promote use by the public,
but still provide a bit of weather protection.
BUILDING SCALE
The design of the building provides elements that mitigate the height of the certain
portions of the building while allowing other building elements to extend the height of
the building. This provides visual interest along with the comfort of knowing where to
enter the building. The materials chosen have small details that provide human scale
when up close.
BUILDING FORM
The design allows the individual elements to be their own “building blocks” and together
form the entire building.
ARCHITECTURAL ELEMENTS / MATERIALS
The architectural features of this building are stucco, a tried and true finish material,
vertical siding that contains the building blocks, and the awnings that add additional
color and interest to the building.
SIGNAGE AND LIGHTING
The building signage is limited to a single location above the main entry of the building,
no other building signage is proposed for the building. This is a single tenant occupancy
thus additional signage is not needed.
PARKING LOTS
The majority of the parking is existing and very little change is proposed. A new parking
element is being developed on the east end of the building that helps in two ways; 1.
Provides additional parking on the site, 2. Provides access to another vehicle
entrance/exit point on Progress Avenue.
PEDESTRIAN WALKWAYS & FACILITIES
A new concrete sidewalk is proposed from the building to the existing outdoor plaza
located to the east of the building. This will allow staff and customers an opportunity to
more easily access this site amenity.
