Project Narrative
Overview
Henrickson Architecture (HA) worked collaboratively with GEM to refine the
spatial needs and develop a new 42,700 square feet educational campus. Two
alternatives were considered initially then revised and refined to create a final
solution that optimizes project value to the school district and community.
Following selection of the preferred concept individual focus group meetings
were held to detail the design for individual spaces. Finally, engineering concepts
were integrated into the design and Bouma USA prepared a cost estimate to
verify budget compliance.
Exterior Design
The exterior design of the building was carefully chosen to provide cost effective
and durable solutions that met the City of Meridian Architectural Standards.
The exterior consists of painted textured cement board lap siding, prefinished
metal panels, and clear anodized aluminum storefront system for points of entry.
Paint selections were chosen to accent the natural surroundings and tie in the
exterior landscape design. The main facade has both vertical and horizontal
accent trims painted in contrasting colors. These accent trims are a key building
design element that creates visual curb appeal and a consistent theme to the
overall building design. Darker paint colors are used on the lower 42” of the
design to visually anchor the building to the ground. This darker color scheme is
continued throughout between the buildings vertical modulation.
Main entry locations are identified by floating canopies. Windows and exterior
glazing are arranged in a rhythmical pattern throughout the buildings design,
integrated with the vertical trims and accent paint colors this creates additional
focal points on the longer facades.

Building Site
The buildings landscaping includes landscaping around the building includes
both flowering and shade trees, a variety of shrubs, and low maintenance areas.
Parking areas are located to allow for full views of the building’s façade when
approaching the two main entry points.
Building signage consists of the GEM School Logo on the buildings west facing
façade. Additionally, a monument sign is located on the entry of N. McDermott
Road. The monument sign design compliments the overall building with similar
material and color selections.
