Narrative for 127 E. State Ave.
About Me
My name is Andrea Shartzer, and I have been working in child care for just over 15
years. I specialize in working with younger children and have recently received my Bachelor's
in Early Childhood Education from Ashford University. In addition, I also have an Associate's
with a concentration in Accounting. In the next year I plan to go back to school, at Ashford
University, to receive my Master's in Early Childhood Education Leadership.
I began my profession in child care, in a large-scale child-care facility, which I worked as
the lead infant teacher for about 4 years. As I learned more about policies and procedures of the
facility I realized it was an environment that I did not want to work in any longer. This is when I
decided to branch out onto my own; opening my first in-home location, and that is when Our
Future Society was created.
Our Future Society, LLC
Our Future Society first began in June of 2009 but did not become an LLC until just a
couple years ago. Currently Our Future Society is an in-home facility, where I have 3 employees
and care for 12 children. My downstairs is dedicated to the daycare, with nearly 1000 square
feet that is used solely for the use of the business. There is a converted garage, a living room,
and a full kitchen that the children have access to throughout the day, which offers them a feeling
of belonging and comfort, much like they feel at their own homes.
I work strictly with younger children, with ages ranging from birth to 5 -years. This gives
us the opportunity to work closely with this vulnerable age, offering as much one-on-one
attention and learning as possible. This is the same atmosphere we plan to provide to the
children at our newest location on 127 E. State Ave. in Meridian.
127 E. State Ave. Location
At this new location I plan to care for 12 early age children, with the help of my 3
assistants. We plan to be able to offer more separation of ages, as the new location will have
three rooms on the main level that will be dedicated to the children. This will allow more age
appropriate learning, and manipulatives that better meet their age requirements. There will be
one room used for infants, that will give them more access to floor time, and toys that will help
them meet their necessary milestones, without the fear of being accidently injured by older
children. There will be a room for the toddlers, allowing for more individual manipulatives that
meet their age. Then there will be a room setup as a classroom for the preschool age children.
This will allow for individual as well as cooperative learning for the older children, as to better
help prepare them for the entry into elementary.
As for the upper level of the facility, it will be used for office space and curriculum
preparation. One room with be the office, where I plan to keep all confidential client and
employee information, as well as a place to work on accounting, bookkeeping, and other
business-related responsibilities. The other upstairs room will be used for curriculum
preparation and activity planning. This space will be where teachers can feel free to prepare for
future activities or research upcoming themes or projects.
The lower level (basement) will be used strictly for storage space, as there is plenty of
materials and manipulatives that are accumulated throughout the year that are not needed all the
time, such as holiday decorations and extra toys.
There is also a small outdoor area that will be used for physical activities. The area is
fully fenced, offering a great place for the children to use up extra energy as well as get plenty of
fresh air. Each age group will have specific times to go outside, as to be sure there is room for
the children to move freely as well as to ensure that noise is kept to a minimum.
Future Plans for Our Future Society
Over the next 6 -months I would like to get the 127 E. State Ave. location zoned and
licensed to accommodate 20 children, at maximum. This would allow me to work with more
children while my larger facility is being built, as my long-term goal is to open a 10,000 square
foot facility at 10 -Mile. After my 10 -Mile location is open I still hope to keep the downtown
location open, as it is a great location for many of my current clients.
