New Business A. End of Fiscal Year Quotes [Action Item] 1. Initial Point Gallery Expenses Jay, representing the visual arts, recommended that MAC go with pre-cut mat boards in 8” x 10” in order to give more structure to the artists submitting work and to provide a more cohesive and professional gallery experience. Motion by Jay; second by Jennifer to approve $740 for Initial Point Gallery expenses – all ayes – motion carried. 2. Meridian Art Week Expenses Commissioners discussed the proposed budget and asked to include t-shirts as part of the supplies ordered. Motion by Jessica; second by Gina to approve Not-to-exceed $2,720 for Art Week expenses – all ayes – motion carried. B. Northwest Public Art Consortium 2018 [Action Item] The Commission talked about sending members and/or Hillary to the NOWPAC Conference. If more people are interested in attending, there are additional funds that could be allocated towards the conference. Motion by Jessica; second by Gina to approve $1,600 for at least two people to attend the NOWPAC Conference in Moscow – all ayes – motion carried. C. Strategic Plan Committee Report [Action Item] No report, just a reminder for commissioners to complete their section(s) of the strategic plan to review and send those comments to Hillary. D. Public Art Committee Report [Action Item] 1. Mural Dedication Report Jessica reported that the mural dedication went really well. There were about 20 people present. Commissioners have heard other positive feedback about the mural. 2. MAPS Planning Update Jessica and Jay reported on the current work and progress on MAPS Planning. Hillary and other staff will meet to provide a basic plan (or two) for the committee to evaluate and consider. Once a plan is agreed upon at the committee level, they will bring a recommendation forward to MAC. With MAC’s approval, the plan would then be shared with any other stakeholders that would be involved in the outlined projects. 3. Other Reporting from Committee Meeting No further reports. E. Events and Outreach Committee Report [Action Item] 1. Current Marketing Plans Hillary shared the current marketing materials to MAC. 2. Youth Programs Hillary reminded commission members about the youth programs that MAC is hosting. 5. Old Business A. Traffic Box Art Wraps 2018 [Action Item] Confirm Locations for Northern Nights and In Good Company Commission decided on Northern Nights being installed at Ten Mile and McMillan and for In Good Company to be installed at Franklin and Linder. 2. Vinyl Vendor Selection Motion by Jay; second by Gina to accept Signs Etc. as our vinyl vendor and extend a one year contract that may be renewed — all ayes — motion carried. 6. Reports A. Admin Report Attached, and verbal report on Concerts on Broadway provided. Usually the first concert has relatively low attendance. This concert was a little light on attendance but had a much better crowd that `first concerts' in previous years. No AIV issues, but is was very warm out and the instruments needed to be tuned frequently by the artists because of the ever-changing conditions. B. Approval of Monthly Financial Report [Action Item] Report summary not presented for approval, as it needed corrections. Recent expenses were shared for the commission to review. 7. Next Meeting Strategic Plan Committee will meet on the same day, prior to the August 9 Regular Arts Commission meeting. 8. Individuals or teams will be challenged to create a 3 – 10 minute film. The theme for this year’s festival is: How Art Impacts Your Daily Life. You may interpret this theme in many ways, but your completed film should have a clear and intuitive connection to the theme. A monetary award of $50 and the opportunity to participate in a one-hour pre-production consultation with Northwest Motion Pictures staff will be granted to the creator(s) of the top film, as selected by a panel. If competing as a team, the monetary award will be split evenly and the pre-production consultation will apply to the group as a whole for a future team project. DATE OF SCREENING: The Short Film Festival will take place on Tuesday, September 4, 2018 at the Meridian Library District’s unBound, in Downtown Meridian . The screening will start at 6:30 p.m. You may arrive as early as 6:00 p.m. to mingle with other attendees and find a seat . We will play as many films as possible, but plan to allow our jurors about 20 minutes to discuss their scores and make a selection for first place. Awards will be announced around 7:45 p.m., or sooner. ELIGIBILITY: Individuals or teams may compete. Teams should consist of no more than six students enrolled in a middle or high school in the West Ada School District or another middle or high school within the Meridian city limits (private, charter, etc.), for the 2018-2019 school year. All team members must be eligible. Teams must use their own supplies or work with local resources to borrow needed supplies. Teams will be challenged to complete a chalk drawing on the sidewalk of Idaho Avenue, roughly 3’ x 3’ within two hours. The theme for this year’s competition is: Art in the Future. Teams may interpret this however they wish, but they should be able to provide a rationale for how their completed work embodies the theme. A panel will judge the artwork, and monetary awards will be granted to the school art departments of the three teams with the highest score. DATE OF EVENT: The Chalk Art Competition will take place on Friday, September 7, 2018, around Generations Plaza, in Downtown Meridian. Drawing will start promptly at 6:00 p.m. and will be stopped at 8:00 p.m. Artists may check in at 5:30 p.m. The panel will assess the completed works at 8:00 p.m., and awards will be announced around 8:30 p.m. ELIGIBILITY: Teams should consist of two to six high school students enrolled in a high school in the West Ada School District, or another high school within the Meridian city limits (private, charter, etc.).
