Native topsoil shall be stockpiled for re-use in landscape w o r k . T o p s o i l s h a l l b e f e r t i l , f r i a b l e , natural loam, surface soil, reasonable free of subsoil, clay l u m p s , b r u s h , w e e d s , r o o t s , s t u m p s , stones larger than 1 inch in any dimension, and other extr a n e o u s o r t o x i c m a t t e r h a r m f u l t o plant growth. 1. Contractor shall send a minimum of three (3) represent a t i v e t o p s o i l s a m p l e s f o r t e s t i n g . See testing requirements below. Contractor is respons i b l e f o r w h a t e v e r s o i l a d d i t i v e s a r e recommended by the tests. Submit to Architect for appr o v a l . C o m p o s t w i l l b e a d d e d t o other additives and added regardless of test results. B. If quantity of stockpiled topsoil is insufficient, contractor to p r o v i d e i m p o r t e d t o p s o i l t h a t i s fertile, friable, natural loam, surface soil, reasonably free o f s u b s o i l , c l a y l u m p s , b r u s h , w e e d s and other litter, and free of roots, stumps, stones larger th a n 1 i n c h e s i n a n y d i m e n s i o n , a n d other extraneous or toxic matter harmful to plant growth. 1. Obtain topsoil from local sources or areas with similar s o i l c h a r a c t e r i s t i c s t o t h a t o f p r o j e c t site. Obtain topsoil only from naturally well-drained sites w h e r e t o p s o i l o c c u r s i n a d e p t h o f not less than 4 inches. Do not obtain from bogs or marsh e s . 2. Composition: Topsoil shall contain from 1 to 20% organi c m a t t e r a s d e t e r m i n e d b y t h e Organic Carbon, 6A, Chemical Analysis Method describe d i n U S D A S o i l S u r v e y I n v e s t i g a t i o n Report No. 1. Maximum particle size, 3/4-inch, with maxi m u m 3 % r e t a i n e d o n 1 / 4 - i n c h s c r e e n . Other components shall conform to the following limits:pH6.5 to 7.5Soluble Salts600 ppm maxim u m Silt 25-50%Clay10-30%Sand20-50% 3. Contractor shall submit representative soil report on i m p o r t e d t o p s o i l p r o p o s e d f o r u s e f o r approval. Report shall meet standards below. Contract o r i s r e s p o n s i b l e f o r w h a t e v e r s o i l additives are recommended by the test. Compost will b e i n a d d i t i o n t o o t h e r a d d i t i v e s a n d added regardless of test results. C. Soil Testing 1. Soil tests are required for this project (see above for re q u i r e m e n t s ) . T e s t s h a l l b e p r o v i d e d as follows:a. Provide certified analysis at time of sample submitte d ( t h r e e s a m p l e s i m p o r t e d t o p s o i l ) . Amend soils per chemist's recommendations and as h e r e i n s p e c i f i e d u n l e s s o t h e r w i s e approved by Architect. 2. Test shall include, but not limited to recommendations o n c h e m i c a l d i s t r i b u t i o n s , o r g a n i c contents, pH factors, and sieve analysis as necessary. T e s t # 1 T b y W e s t e r n L a b o r a t o r i e s (1-800-658-3858) is required. 3. Contractor is responsible for whatever soil additives ar e r e c o m m e n d e d b y t h e s o i l t e s t i n g laboratory. 4. Contractor shall coordinate, obtain and pay for all soil t e s t s . 5. If regenerative noxious weeds are present in the soil, r e m o v e a l l r e s u l t a n t g r o w t h i n c l u d i n g roots throughout one-yest period after acceptance of w o r k , a t n o c o s t t o O w n e r . 2.2 pH ADJUSTERS A. When pH does not comply with this specification, comme r c i a l g r a d e a l u m i n u m sulfate shall be used to adjust soil pH.2.3 SOIL AMENDMENTS A. Compost: Compost: “Cascade Compost” from Cloverdale N u r s e r y ( 2 0 8 ) 3 7 5 - 5 2 6 2 and NuSoil Compost (208) 629-6912 or approved equal in e q u a l a m o u n t s b y v o l u m e . B. Commercial Fertilizer: Fertilizer shall be complete, standa r d c o m m e r c i a l b r a n d fertilizer. It shall be free-flowing and packaged in new wat e r p r o o f , n o n - o v e r l a i d bags clearly labeled as to weight, manufacturer, and cont e n t . P r o t e c t m a t e r i a l s from deterioration during delivery and while stored at site. 1. Commercial fertilizer "A" for trees and shrubs during pla n t i n g ; " B e s t T a b s " ( 2 1 - 5 - 1 0 ) t y p e or equal. 2. Commercial fertilizer "B" for lawn areas, applied to bed p r i o r t o s o d d i n g , t o b e 1 6 - 1 6 - 1 6 applied at manufacturers recommended rates. 3. Commercial fertilizer "C" for lawn areas three to four we e k s a f t e r p l a n t i n g (sod). Best Turf Supreme (16-6-8) type or equal. C. Herbicide: Pre-emergent for topical application in plantin g b e d s . O x i a d i a z o n 2 G b r a n d o r pre-approved equal. Use in accordance with manufacture r ' s r e c o m m e n d a t i o n o n a l l p l a n t i n g beds.2.4 PLANT MATERIALS A. Quality: Provide trees, shrubs, and other plants of size, g e n u s , s p e c i e s , a n d variety shown for landscape work and complying with reco m m e n d a t i o n s a n d requirements of ANSI Z60.1 "American Standard for Nurs e r y S t o c k " . B. Deciduous Trees: Provide trees of height and caliper sch e d u l e d o r s h o w n w i t h branching configuration recommended by ANSI Z60.1 for t y p e a n d s p e c i e s required. Single stem trees except where special forms ar e s h o w n o r l i s t e d . C. Deciduous Shrubs: Provide shrubs of the height shown o r l i s t e d , n o t l e s s t h a n minimum number of canes required by ANSI Z60.1 for typ e a n d h e i g h t o f s h r u b . D. Coniferous and Broadleafed Evergreens: Provide evergr e e n s o f s i z e s s h o w n o r l i s t e d . Dimensions indicate minimum spread for spreading and s e m i - s p r e a d i n g t y p e e v e r g r e e n s and height for other types, such as globe, dwarf, cone, pyr a m i d a l , b r o a d u p r i g h t , a n d columnar. Provide normal quality evergreens with well bal a n c e d f o r m c o m p l y i n g w i t h requirements for other size relationships to the primary di m e n s i o n s h o w n . 2.5 GRASS MATERIALSA.Lawn sod: Provide strongly rooted sod, not less than 1 gr o w i n g s e a s o n o l d , a n d f r e e o f w e e d s and undesirable native grasses. Provide only sod capabl e o f g r o w t h a n d d e v e l o p m e n t w h e n planted (viable, not dormant).1.Provide sod of uniform pad sizes with maximum 5% d e v i a t i o n i n e i t h e r l e n g t h o r w i d t h . Broken pads or pads with uneven ends will not be a c c e p t a b l e . S o d p a d s i n c a p a b l e o f supporting their own weight when suspended vertic a l l y w i t h a f i r m g r a s p o n u p p e r 1 0 % of pad will be rejected.B. Provide sod composed of: 80% Kentucky Bluegrass and 2 0 % R y e g r a s s . 2.6 MISCELLANEOUS LANDSCAPE MATERIALS A. Anti-Desiccant: Emulsion type, film-forming agent design e d t o p e r m i t transpiration, but retard excessive loss of moisture from pl a n t s . D e l i v e r i n m a n u f a c t u r e r ' s fully identified containers and mix in accordance with man u f a c t u r e r ' s i n s t r u c t i o n s . B. Mulch: Mulch for planting beds shall be medium ground b a r k m u l c h , f r e e o f s p l i n t e r s , consistent in appearance, and shall contain no toxic subst a n c e d e t r i m e n t a l t o p l a n t l i f e . C. Wrapping: Tree-wrap tape not less than 4 inches wide, d e s i g n e d t o p r e v e n t b o r e r damage and winter freezing. D. Stakes and Guys: Provide stakes and deadmen of sound n e w h a r d w o o d , t r e a t e d s o f t w o o d , o r redwood, free of knot holes and other defects. Provide wi r e t i e s a n d g u y s o f 2 - s t r a n d , t w i s t e d , pliable galvanized iron wire, not lighter than 12 ga. with zi n c - c o a t e d t u r n b u c k l e s . PART 3 - EXECUTION3.1 PREPARATION - GENERAL A. General Contractor shall be responsible for excavating pl a n t i n g a r e a s t o appropriate depths for placement of topsoil as specified h e r e i n . B. Lay out individual tree and shrub locations and areas for m u l t i p l e p l a n t i n g s . Stake locations and outline areas and secure Architect's a c c e p t a n c e b e f o r e s t a r t of planting work. Make minor adjustments as may be req u i r e d . 3.2 PREPARATION OF PLANTING SOIL A. Before mixing, clean topsoil of roots, plants, sod, stones, c l a y l u m p s , a n d o t h e r e x t r a n e o u s materials harmful or toxic to plant growth. B. Mix specified compost and fertilizers with topsoil at rates s p e c i f i e d . D e l a y m i x i n g fertilizer if planting will not follow placing of planting soil in a f e w d a y s . Compost: Lawn Areas: 1/4 compost, : 3/4 topsoil. Shrub Areas: 1/3 compost, 2/3 topsoil. Fertilizer: Per soil test and manufacture's recommendati o n s . SECTION 02900 - LANDSCAPE WORKPART 1 - GENERAL1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS A. Drawings and general provisions of Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and Division 1 Specification Sections.1.2 SUMMARY A. This Section includes provisions for the following items: 1. Trees. 2. Shrubs. 3. Ground cover. 4. Lawns. 5. Topsoil and Soil Amendments. 6. Miscellaneous Landscape Elements. 7. Initial maintenance of landscape materials. B. Related Sections: The following sections contain requirements. 1. Underground sprinkler system is specified in Section 02810, "Irrigation System."1.3 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Subcontract landscape work to a single firm specializing in landscape work. B. Source Quality Control: 1. General: Ship landscape materials with certificates of inspection required by governing authorities. Comply with regulations applicable to landscape materials. 2. Do not make substitutions. If specified landscape material is not obtainable, submit proof of non-availability to Architect, with proposal for use of equivalent material. 3. Analysis and Standards: Package standard products with manufacturer's certified analysis. For other materials, provide analysis by recognized laboratory made in accordance with methods established by the Association of Official Agriculture Chemists, wherever applicable. 4. Trees, Shrubs and Groundcovers: Provide trees, shrubs, and groundcovers of quantity, size, genus, species, and variety shown and scheduled for work complying with recommendations and requirements of ANSI Z60.1 "American Standard for Nursery Stock". Provide healthy, vigorous stock, grown in recognized nursery in accordance with good horticultural practice and free of disease, insects, eggs, larvae, and defects such as knots, sun-scald, injuries, abrasions, or disfigurement. 5. Label at least one tree and one shrub of each variety with attached waterproof tag with legible designation of botanical and common name. a. Where formal arrangements or consecutive order of trees or shrubs are shown, select stock for uniform height and spread. 6. Inspection: The Architect may inspect trees and shrubs either at place of growth or at site before planting, for compliance with requirements for genus, species, variety, size, and quality. Architect retains right to further inspect trees and shrubs for size and condition of balls and root systems, insects, injuries and latent defects, and to reject unsatisfactory or defective material at any time during progress of work. Remove rejected trees or shrubs immediately from project site.1.4 SUBMITTALS A. General: Submit the following in accordance with Conditions of Contract and Division 1 Specification Sections. B. Plant and Material Certifications:1. Certificates of inspection as required by governmental authorities. 2. Manufacturer's or vendor's certified analysis for soil amendments and fertilizer materials. 3. Label data substantiating that plants, trees, shrubs and planting materials comply withspecified requirements. C. Planting Schedule: Proposed planting schedule, indicating dates for each type of landscape work during normal season for such work in area of the site. Correlate with specified maintenance periods to provide maintenance from date of substantial completion. Once accepted, revise dates only as approved in writing, after documentation of reasons for delays. 1.5 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING A. Sod: Time delivery so that sod will be placed within 24 hours after stripping. Protect sod against drying and breaking of rolled strips. B. Trees and Shrubs: Provide freshly dug trees and shrubs. Do not prune prior to delivery unless otherwise approved by Architect. Do not bend or bind-tie trees or shrubs in such manner as to damage bark, break branches, or destroy natural shape. Provide protective covering during delivery. Do not drop balled and burlapped stock during delivery. C. Deliver trees and shrubs after preparations for planting have been completed and plant immediately. If planting is delayed more than 6 hours after delivery, set trees and shrubs in shade, protect from weather and mechanical damage, and keep roots moist by covering with mulch, burlap or other acceptable means of retaining moisture. D. Do not remove container-grown stock from containers until planting time. E. Do not drop or dump materials from vehicles during delivery or handling. Avoid any damage to rootballs during deliver, storage and handling.1.6 JOB CONDITIONS A. Utilities: Determine location of underground utilities and work in a manner which will avoid possible damage. Hand excavate, as required. Maintain grade stakes until removal is mutually agreed upon by parties concerned. B. Excavation: When conditions detrimental to plant growth are encountered, such rubble fill, adverse drainage conditions, or obstructions, notify Architect before planting. C. Adjacent Landscape: Protect planted areas adjacent to construction area. Replace or recondition to prior conditions at project completion.1.7 SEQUENCING AND SCHEDULING A. Planting Time: Proceed with, and complete landscape work as rapidly as portions of site become available, working within seasonal limitations for each kind of landscape work required.1.Plant or install all plant materials during normal planting seasons from 15 February to 15 November.2.Correlate planting with specified maintenance periods to provide maintenance from date ofsubstantial completion. B. Coordination with Lawns: Plant trees and shrubs after final grades are established and prior to planting of lawns, unless otherwise acceptable to Architect. If planting of trees and shrubs occurs after lawn work, protect lawn areas and promptly repair damage to lawns resulting from planting operations. 1.8 SPECIAL PROJECT WARRANTY A. Warranty lawns through specified lawn maintenance period, until Final Project Acceptance. B. Warranty trees and shrubs, for a period of one year after date of substantial completion, against defects including death and unsatisfactory growth, except for defects resulting from neglect by Owner, abuse or damage by others, or unusual phenomena or incidents beyond Landscape Installer's control. C. Remove and replace trees, shrubs, or other plants dead or in unhealthy condition during warranty period. Make replacements during growth season following end of warranty period.
