When the friend accompanying the applicant saw the depth of our files on her families, she said she’d be back! Others have used the homestead records in attempting to locate the home sites of their families, one was from a family that had rented and none of our records contain anything other than land owners – so we struck out on that one. But, did send the next land searcher out with places he could investigate further – so, some we can help & others we can’t. We plan to take part in the city hall Christmas B azaar on Dec. 7. We’ll be selling duplicates of books – more of those centennial boy dolls at a much reduced rate and copies of the Centennial mural that hangs in city hall. Most of our members were present yesterday for the awarding of the County Historic Preservation group County Treasure award to Howard & Tere Foley for their preservation efforts for the former telephone building on Main Street. It is one of the few buildings in the area with excellent integrity. (that’s a term used by the Preservation community indicating unchanged from the original). Thanks to the Meridian HPC for providing the treats – Hopefully, during the next year progress will be made in collating & printing the information in the files into a more shareable format than many of the files currently have. Many of them contain Meridian newspaper clippings & handwritten notes that pertain to the file title, copies of information from books & various depositories around the area. Robbie is making a spreadsheet format of the families & their locations in the 1900 & later census. Carol is working on the 1940 census. We were able to add missing information on the chain of council members for the years that were missing on a current chart – I even went right to the drawer in the file where the book that Herald Cox kept information during his years as city clerk. The clerk’s office is putting it into a spreadsheet format – Also, we alerted the current city clerk to the fact that the records for the village years were with the Historical Society’s collection.
