The Symphony is in the middle of our 26°t season and just completed our 11°i annual Young Artist Competition. For the
first time in the history of this competition, we will be welcoming four student musicians to the stage at our April 22" d
Rising Stars concert.
Junior Piano — Christian Nielsen
Senior Piano —Anthony Luo
Senior Strings — Julia Caven, viola
Senior Instrumental — Minjun Kwak, tenor sax
I would also note that for our upcoming concert on February 25, the Symphony will perform the Back Double Violin
Concerto with soloists Kate Jarvis and Nicole Oswald. Kate was the Senior Division Soloist Award recipient back in the
first year of our competition in 2007. Nicole was the Junior Division Soloist Award recipient in the second year of our
competition in 2008, Both have gone on to become very accomplished musicians and we are excited to have them back
with us.
The audiences at our performances average approximately 750 per concert with our Christmas performance standing room
only (900 capacity). Tickets for the performances are kept at a level that allows for families, seniors and others with modest
income to enjoy hearing a symphony orchestra. Our ticket prices are as follows: Student/Seniors - $9.00, Adult - $11.00
and Child - $4 with an adult purchase.
We understand the importance of every committed dollar by the Arts Commission and make sure that these dollars are
invested right back into our programs. A grant of $300 will be used for music acquisition, rental/purchase, for the orchestra
parts to accompany our Young Artists on the April performance. We may also use any remaining portion for the piano
rental needed for our pianists on this concert.
Thank you so much for your continued support of our organization,
%Sincerely,
avid Sd

City Wide Strategic Plan
• MAC has three City wide strategic plan items that pertain directly to either MAC
programming or needs.
• Currently this plan is being added to a database and City Council will receive an
update on the plan on February 21, 2017.
o Develop a Plan to infuse art in public spaces
■ MAC currently has a plan to carry MAPS through the end of your
current strategic plan. I would recommend that MAC continue
updating the strategic plan and including detail for the public art
plans within the years covered.
Tactic # Wille
1 Catalog existing public art in Meridian.
Z Use MAPS ordinance as a guide to incorporate City initiated public artwork
throughout Meridian.
3 Work with City departments to target public art at every city -owned parcel visible
and accessible to the public.
4 Work with other government service partners to identify and potentially locate
public art at their facilities in Meridian.
5 Identify privately owned locations where public art projects could be located.
6 Prepare a public art plan and present to City Council for adoption.
2/3
o Connect to the artisan community and promote the education of utilitarian
art forms and their historical significanc/value in our community
Tactic # Title
1 Identify membershrades who are part of the local artisan community.
2 Create a plan to build ties and create opportunities with local artisans.
3 Review eAsting information on the historical significance of utilitarian art in the
community to determine if additional research or documentation is necessary.
4 Create educational information to be shared regarding the importance/significance
of utilitarian art in Meridian.
5 develop a promotional plan to share educational information to the community
regarding utilitarian art forms.
o Research and identify a catalog of long-term funding mechanisms and
contributors for supporting arts and culture.
1 Identify funding needed to support e)asting and planned arts and culture events
and activities in the City of Meridian.
2 Establish a database for tracking funding and donors.
3 Catalog e)asting funding mechanisms and donors for Meridian's arts and culture
events and activities.
4 Research additional funding mechanisms available on the local, state and federal
level to meet planned arts and culture events and activities in the City of Meridian.
5 Identify current and potential donors for arts and culture on the local. state. and
federal level.
I would love to be able to sit down with you all and discuss these objectives and
tactics, but your agendas are so full that I don't know if we would have enough
time to cover this in full. I also don't want to call a special meeting, just to address
the city wide strategic plan, though. Are there other items that MAC members
would like us to have time to dig in to that we could include on an agenda for a
special meeting?

Meridian Commission
Ca(( for Recommendations: "JOURNEY OF HEROES"
OVERVIEW:
The Meridian Arts Commission (MAC) and Meridian Parks and Recreation Commission (MPRC) seek
recommendations for heroes to be represented in a public art installation at Heroes Park. These commissions
have partnered with McCall Studios to create "Journey of Heroes." Part of McCall's installation includes creating
five (5) mile markers that follow the walking path around the park. The artist proposed that these mile markers
feature local heroes that the community would like to recognize. We could like to invite local students to
nominate the five (5) heroes that may be featured these mile markers.
ELIGIBILITY:
Currently, MAC is reaching out to Meridian arts schools and neighborhood schools to each submit a
recommendation. Those schools include: Chief Joseph Elementary, Christine Donnell Elementary, Pioneer
Elementary, Renaissance High School, and Willow Creek Elementary. These schools may independently decide
how they would like to select their hero recommendation. If one of the invited schools declines to make a
recommendation, MAC may reach out to alternate schools for their students' recommendation.
RECOMMENDATION REQUIREMENTS:
Please use the hero recommendation form on the next page to submit a recommendation. Each school may only
submit one (1) form. Heroes recommended must be:
• Local - Someone born locally or who had a major impact locally, limited to Idaho specifically
• Real (non -fictional) - Man, woman, animal, living or deceased
Materials submitted will not be returned. Recommendations may be submitted via email, in-person delivery, or
U.S. Mail addressed to:
Meridian Arts Commission
Attn: Journey of Heroes Recommendation
33 East Broadway Avenue, Suite 104
Meridian, ID 83642
DEADLINE:
Interest needs to be reported by 12:00 p.m. (NOON) on Friday, February 10, 2017. Hero Recommendation Forms
are due by 12:00 p.m. (NOON) on Friday, April 28, 2017.
SELECTION PROCESS:
The final selection and placement of heroes in the
public art installation will be made by MAC and MPRC
representatives and may be dependent on the ability
to receive permission to use an image of the hero.

DESCRIPTION OF YOUR SCHOOLS' PROCESS TO NOMINATE A HERO
Suggestions include: nomination could be determined by the class who reads the most in a read-a-thon (or through another
contest), nomination could be determined by a drawing where each class gets to submit one hero, or students recognized for
positive behavior could submit hero recommendations and a student council can determine the final nomination, etc.
