The group gathered under the large picnic shelter at Heroes Park for dinner at 5:30 p.m. Steve Siddoway welcomed everyone and recognized Lawn Co. for sponsoring the dinner provided by The Honeybaked Ham Company. He introduced the Mayor, City Council, MPR Commissioners, Planning Et Zoning Commissioner, and City staff members who were all present. Steve Siddoway was the main tour guide and speaker. Assistant tour guides and speakers from the MPR Department included Mike Barton, Roger Norberg, Jeremy Aldrich, Jay Gibbons, Colin Moss, Debbie Miller, Elroy Huff, Allison Kaptein, and Garrett White. Other special speakers included Tom Roy, Steve Arnold, and Orville Cheek. MPR Administrative Assistant II Rachel Myers distributed packets each containing documents, including a tour booklet featuring Meridian's parks and pathways, the Meridian Community Center, MPR Staff, MPR Commission, etc.; a tour route map; the Meridian Pathways Network Map; a handout on the MPAL Basketball Program; a handout on the Heroes Park Reclaimed Water Interpretive Plaza; a fact sheet on Heroes Park Class A Reclaimed Water; an aerial map of the Fivemile Creek Pathway Segment E Bridgetower Connection; a site map of Settlers Park; a flyer advertising the 2"d Annual Meridian Community Block Party; slide handouts on the Pilot Recycling Program at Settlers Park; aSmoke-Free Parks sign graphic; three informational sheets on Smoke-Free Parks; a Fun Facts handout on Adult Sports Programs -Softball, Dodgeball, Volleyball, Flag Football, and Basketball; the Julius M. Kleiner Memorial Park Master Site Plan and Key Amenities Map; photos and graphics of the construction progress at Kleiner Park; the Dog Park Task Force fundraising/volunteering brochure; the MPR brochure; the Kleiner Park gifting brochure; the 2011 Fall Activity Guide; and the Meridian Senior Center's Build the Brick Road to Center at the Park form. Tour Route and Key Topics: • Heroes Park -The group viewed various equipment demonstrations by the MPR Maintenance Division crew, such as mowers, slicers, mule, edger, irrigation controller. Security camera demonstrations were also made available on a laptop computer for viewing. The group walked to the basketball courts. Steve Siddoway highlighted the newly constructed basketball courts and discussed the City's partnership with MPAL. Tom Roy provided some history on MPAL and highlighted the MPAL Basketball Program. The group walked to and around the reclaimed water feature, which, earlier on that day, received new fencing improvements around it. Participants boarded the charter bus and were transported to the next destination. Participants drove by the Fivemile Creek Segment E BridQetower Connection pathway project site as Jay was providing an update. • Meridian Settlers Park -The bus driver pulled into the property, but passengers stayed on board. Colin Moss highlighted the pond, which received new benches and boulders surrounding it, and volunteer projects. He also talked about CableONE Movie Night and the upcoming Meridian Community Block Party. Steve Siddoway discussed Smoke-Free Parks. Mike Barton talked about Recycling in Parks. Debbie Miller described Maintenance at Settlers, including shelter reservations/park usage, special events, and Temporary Use Permits. • Downtown Trees- Attendees drove by the downtown area while Elroy Huff talked about Downtown Tree Maintenance. Meridian Community Center -The bus pulled into the parking lot, and the group disembarked from the bus walking to the Community Center. Touring inside the building, Allison Kaptein highlighted the ADA upgrades, the Teen Camp, Classes/Activities, and the Teen Activities Council Ignite Youth event. The group boarded the bus and drove to their next stop. • Storey Park -Attendees unloaded the bus and walked to Mo Brooks Field. Mike Barton highlighted the new Bleachers and Renovations. Jeremy Aldrich talked about Volunteer Projects. Garrett White provided an overview of the Sports Program and reviewed some league statistics. The group boarded the bus and traveled to their next destination. • Fivemile Creek Restoration -While driving by the site, Roger Norberg talked about the Fivemile Creek Restoration project. • New Maintenance Facility -Passengers on board were able to see the future site of the new Parks Maintenance Facility while Roger Norberg was speaking. Julius M. Kleiner Memorial Park -Before touring the park, Steve Arnold and Orville Cheek joined the group. Orville provided some history on Mr. Kleiner. Steve gave a brief update on construction progress. Passengers exited the bus for a walking tour of the park. Steve Siddoway highlighted the Meridian Senior Center, Grand Promenade, and Active Recreation Complex. Roger Norberg highlighted the Pump Station. Attendees loaded the bus and were transported back to Heroes Park. • Heroes Park -The group returned to this park to conclude the tour. 3.
