SPECIAL COMMITTEE MEETING • MINUTES
Meridian City Hall • Parks ~t Recreation Department Conference Room
33 E. Broadway Avenue, Suite 206, Meridian, ID
Tuesday, October 13, 2009 •4:00 p.m.
The Parks Amenities >:t Signage Committee met on Tuesday, October ~ 3, 2009, at Meridian City
Hall, in the Parks Ft Recreation Conference Room (Suite 206), 33 E. Broadway Avenue,
Meridian, ID. The meeting was called to order at approximately 4:05 p.m.
Attending: X Creg Steele, Commissioner >:t Chairman
X Phillip Liddell, Commissioner s:t Minutes Taker
X Michael Martin, Commissioner
X Matthew Schultz, Commissioner
X Elroy Huff, MPR Dept.
1. Bocce Ball
Elroy reported that the detail plan drawing and sections of the proposed bocce ball court
provided by Phil have gone to bid to a single contractor. Elroy should receive the estimate
within the next day or two. The plans called for a crushed oyster shell playing surface with
concrete curbs and an alternate playing surface of artificial turf. Once the bid estimate is
received, we will have a better idea how many courts are conceivable to construct and a
final decision can be made where to install them. As previously discussed, the parks
considered for the courts are: Settlers, Gordon Harris, Bear Creek, Centennial, and
Chateau.

• None at this time.
2. Disc Golf
Elroy reported that Brad Deteau has "reduced size" drawings of the parks being considered
for disc golf. However, larger scale plans are being made for Brad to use for determining
more accurately how many holes are appropriate for each park location. Previously, Brad
reported that there was insufficient room at Bear Creek Park for disc golf. However, more
recently, he said that several holes are actually possible there, and he would investigate
more closely. Parks being considered for disc golf are: Settlers, Bear Creek, Seasons,
Champion, and Heroes. We also discussed the need for appropriate signage at each hole to
assist players in navigating the course. In the simplest form, an existing park map could be
installed at each tee box with perhaps red dots indicating the location of each hole along
with a "You are Here" notation at each respective tee. Further discussion needs to take
place to confirm signage development. Our next Special Meeting hopefully can take place
with Brad Deteau at Settlers Park to get a better idea of course design at Settlers (Elroy to
confirm).
Also discussed was Brad's previous remark that he and his team could be instrumental in
fund raising for the installation of disc golf at Kleiner Park. Brad has indicated that he
believed he could arrange the details to raise ample funds for the project. We need to
know more about his approach to fundraising and that perhaps he should now be working
closely with Don Belts (JensenBelts Landscape Architects) during the park design
development phase.
Action Items:
• Elroy to confirm next Special Meeting with Brad Deteau at Settlers Park.
Committee Recommendations to Commission:
• None at this time.
3. Pickle Ball
Elroy briefly touched on a suggestion to consider pickle ball at some of our parks. He
described the sport as played with paddles and a wiffle ball that is hit back and forth over a
net similar to tennis. The playing surface could be an existing tennis court in which two
separate pickle courts are created by using each side of the tennis court as an individual
pickle court. An additional removable net would be installed (perpendicular to the tennis
net) and on each side of the tennis net. The committee couldn't recall that pickle ball was
a requested item on last summer's park amenities survey. No further discussion on this
item at this time.
Action Items:
• None at this time.
Committee Recommendations to Commission:
• None at this time.
4. Banners
Elroy submitted a color copy of 19 street banners being considered for summer use. They
measure approximately 18"x44" and could be installed at various locations. The
committee recommended five of the banners for consideration.

5. Game Tables
Elroy said that the game tables for checkers/chess are now at the Parks and Recreation
maintenance shop. An appropriate anchoring system for the tables and benches has been
designed and will be installed at Generations Plaza and Centennial Park. Precise locations
at these parks are yet to be determined. Elroy will coordinate the installation of the
checker boards and clear coat topping on the tables with Silverline Construction. The cost
estimate for each table was $350. Timeline for completion of this project is fall of 2009.
Public notice of this amenity could be announced in the Valley Times and/or as a link on
