HPC July 2016 I thought we might have a bicycle riding demonstration? - The old school bus was also in the parade — we have purchased an all weather cover for it from the foundation funds in our account. We also paid for the best of show trophy for the Dairy Show from Dairy Wives funds turned over to us. We had visitors yesterday who really liked our displays but didn't want to join, but donated $20. Gaetana Nesbitt is entering more of the `Before the Times" into the index for that publication. This is a "volunteer" summer job — so far one afternoon a week. Carol is entertaining her grandchildren from Prague so is not in on Mondays until August. We will soon be receiving the rest of the microfilmed papers from the Idaho State Historical Society. Steve Barrett from their staff was out for a look see since our last meeting. Earl & I attended the awarding of the Century Farm plaque to the Aldape descendants who still live on the farm. Frank Thomason & Carol Jetton were also in attendance. We do not meet in July but will be back in August for our regularly scheduled meeting — Second Wednesday at 3:00. We have received with no strings attached a collection of glass slides from the Gregory/Packer family. They appear to be developed by a member of the family as he was learning to develop via a printed course. Final disposition will be determined later, we are in touch with the Idaho State Historical Librarian to see if they "fit" into their collection. There are a few ID's by family group, but no individual identification. I'm very pleased with the HPC's newest member — she may be new on the commission, but don't underestimate her knowledge of local history! I enjoyed the Meridian History class. I feel like I came away knowing more about Meridian and its past. The variety of guest speakers was nice. It would have been nice to do our walking tour and farm visits in the morning when it was cooler. I was hoping to come away with more student friendly material. I have used the video on West Ada's site. I find the students have a hard time relating the past to the present. Many of them do not know the locations that are mentioned. It would be nice to add present day pictures so that the students could compare the past to now. It would also be helpful to have a small booklet that explains in kid friendly language how Meridian started and the transition to where it is now. I understand that would be a big undertaking. 2. I really enjoyed taking the History of Meridian Class! I liked that the class was well organized and the instructors were knowledgeable, kind, well- prepared, and relaxed. I liked meeting at City Hall. It provided an opportunity to see the building and the rest of the downtown. One of my favorite parts of the class included the variety of guest speakers. It was clear that the speakers were selected with a purpose in mind. I liked how we learned about different aspects of Meridian, from the history of the town, to what is happening presently, to what the future holds for Meridian. I thought all of the guest speakers were very well prepared and professional, especially the city employees. Hearing from them made me excited about Meridian! I also loved experiencing the walking tour. It would be really neat if some more buildings could be added to the tour. I loved visiting the school house. I also loved the field trips to the farms. The hosts of the field trips were very gracious, knowledgeable, and welcoming. Visiting the farms provided me with a new appreciation and respect for our community. One suggestion I have is to consider scheduling the outside activities for the mornings when the weather is not as warm. However, I realize that there may not have been much flexibility in the schedule, based upon the availability of the farm tours and guest speakers. Luckily, the majority of the class was indoors, so it turned out okay. Thank you for teaching such a fun class and thank you to the City of Meridian for supporting it! I loved that even though it was geared more to 3Td grade teachers, it was still relevant to other grade level teachers. Thank you for putting so much thought into it to make it purposeful, relaxed, and fun. I am definitely going to encourage some of my colleagues to take it, too! 3. Thank you so much for this class. I loved it. I learned so much about the resources out there. I thought the guest speakers you brought in were excellent and it was awesome that we were able to hear from different types of community leaders to get different perspectives. The field trips were so cool and I enjoyed the historical walk downtown. There are so many things I can take away from this to use for my class, but really beyond that I expanded my own knowledge and appreciation in my community. I tried to get my partner teachers to take this class with me, but they didn't because they didn't need the credits. I'm going to tell them they have to take it next year because it was just simply awesome, so hopefully you do it again next summer. 4. 1 thought this class was very interesting. I really enjoyed the "hands-on / walking/ field trip" parts of the class. The guest speakers were great and relevant. The in class time got long at times. I feel like maybe if it was structured a little differently it would have felt more interesting. As a teacher resources are always a great thing and I feel like in class resources were discussed, but we were not given even a list of these books, websites, contacts, field trip information. In my opinion, for the next class, I would have a packet for the teachers with all of these resources and important information. 5. Thank you so much for putting this class on! I am not from this area, so it was really fun to learn about my new home:) I appreciate all the speakers you guys provided. It is great to make those community connections! 6. I thoroughly enjoyed the information presented during this class. I was surprised by the number of speakers presenting to the class. The class has motivated me and given direction as to how I can develop this history unit to be kid -friendly! I am developing the unit with the assistance of the materials you gave to us and from the information from Mrs. Hill. I will definitely be visiting the Meridian Historical Society and gathering more information to make the unit exciting for me and the kids. I hope that Andrus will be able to use some of the funds available to make the field trip to Meridian. We will be checking it out! My one complaint about the class was the field trips in the HOT afternoons. If possible, I think I would have enjoyed the dairy and mint farm in the early morning. I realize that you had schedule issues but the heat almost made the visits unbearable. The field trips were a lot of fun and enjoyed by all! 7. Amy, thank you and Linda for an absolutely wonderful class; I so enjoyed the entire experience, starting with your teaching style. Your expertise and ease of working with teachers was motivational. Meridian City Hall and West Ada SD are so fortunate to have you both. I hope you continue this course for many years to come. 8. I loved the course! I feel that it was very informative and that the instructors not only were educated on the topics but that they genuinely enjoyed the subject matter. It was wonderful to learn about something so personal and important to our community. Thank you for the opportunity! 9. Thank you for teaching the Meridian History class. I really enjoyed it and learned so much about Meridian. I have been telling everyone all that I learned! I loved going on all the tours. I wish we could do the whole thing with our classes. I think they would really enjoy it. Our school is located in Boise, so we are hoping we still can take the field trip next year. We will be in contact with Lori Gash to see what we can do. Thank you so much. 10. Even though I am not a 3`d grade teacher I learned a lot from this class. It taught me about different resources that are available in my community and I also learned some great things that I will carry over into my kindergarten class. $k§} i)X fc3; ) 2`f§g L &« § (2 Plu. k77\}\\\ }±; U, ]`2 k§§7 ` \k k.0\\ ± l7a7§§ kk '34: -C Vol E <\ }\\ cc fc3; ) 2`f§g L &« § (2 Plu. ) F- u \kt k! Lad f0 ) / Cd :5 ml (§ \w clor 9= ZEE AX C § § 2 k77\}\\\ §c k§§7 ` aJz;e ) F- u \kt k! Lad f0 ) / Cd :5 ml (§ \w clor 9= ZEE AX C § § 2 7/12/2016 SHRAB Grants I Idaho Historical Society LSearch Visit Our Learn About Our Be a Buy in Our Rent Our Sites Idaho Collections Supporter Shop Facilities SHRAB Grants Home , Learn About Idaho % Idaho Grants Idaho State Historical Records Advisory Board (SHRAB) G rants Apply by July 15, 2016! - A Closer Look Idaho SHRAB Grant Guidelines Need more information? Every community Road contains historical documents in need of preservation. The Idaho State Boise, ID 83712 Historical Records Advisory Board can help with projects such as digitizing (208) 514-2328 or e-mail collections, purchasing archival supplies, or making local records accessible to researchers. Purpose The mission of SHRAB is to serve as an advocate for the creation, preservation, dissemination, and use of information that accurately chronicles the people and institutions of Idaho, both public and private. One way SHRAB accomplishes this goal is through a grant program to assist in preserving and making accessible significant records relating to Idaho. How Much Money Can We Get? Grants up to $5,000 will be awarded to qualifying institutions and organizations for collections management, preservation, and other archival projects. All grants must be matched on a dollar for dollar basis, either cash or in-kind. How Long Do We Have to Spend the Money? hftps://history.idaho.gov/shrab-grants 1/2 7/12/2016 SHRAB Grants I Idaho Historical Society Projects must be completed by December 31 of the calendar year in which the grant was awarded. What are SHRAB's Criteria in Determining What to Fund? Will the project identify, preserve and/or make accessible significant historic Idaho records? Will the project increase the archival knowledge and/or skills of archivists and other historic record custodians? Does the applicant indicate how the project will be shared with the Idaho historic records community? Will the project institute and/or encourage sound archival practices? Are the proposed activities and expenditures appropriate and cost effective? Does the submitted proposal adhere to regrant project application requirements, and does it contain sufficient information for SHRAB decision-making? Has the applicant submitted accurate financial information, and do the financial projections seem realistic enough to allow for successful completion of the project? Does the project support the mission, goals, and objectives of the Idaho State Historical Records Advisory Board? What Do You Mean by Matching Funds? SHRAB requires a dollar for dollar match on all grants. If you receive a grant for $1,000, you must match it with $1,000. Match may be in the form of cash or in-kind. In-kind match usually means the market value of contributed labor, services, or supplies. Who is Eligible to Apply?
