HPC — April 2016
Basically just more of the same. Robbie is gone for 3 weeks on an anniversary cruise so we are
only open 2 or 3 afternoons a week.
We had many visitors the day of the city volunteer appreciation day.
I received a call from a Pfost family descendant this past week. She was referred to me by
someone at the school district office where she had called about a photo she found in the family
things she was going through after the death of her remaining parent. The photo was one that
Sherrie Ewing had given us a copy of so I was familiar with it. The photo showed the MHS
Championship basketball team of 6 and the coach. We did know the surnames of the team
members but not the coach. Robert Mortensen was able to fill in that blank — he has access to the
old Statesman newspapers on line. With the information that was with the news items that he
found and a rereading of the Meridian Times for that date we are beginning to put together
information to accompany a copy of the photo for "show & tell."
Times were different in 1917 — the war was on — 2 of those team mates went into the service, 1
was killed in France & his remains are at the Meridian cemetery. A third member had service
training but never saw active duty. One of the 6 is listed as graduating from MHS. — We're still
working on information about the others. The coach moved to the Burley school district for the
next year. The Statesman called the team members the "Cheese town lads."
There was a banquet funded by local business men where the team members were feted & given
letterman purple sweaters with gold M's on them. Those were the MHS colors at the time. The
names of the business men in attendance at the dinner at the Owyhee were given in the article.
Interestingly enough — the Statesman carried the banquet information, the Times didn't even
mention it.
We had a guest speaker from the Idaho State Historical Staff at yesterday's meeting. He told us
about the new plans for the State Museum & it's coming displays. It is currently closed and
scheduled to re -open in the fall of 2017.
