Why do you exist? What do you do? Who do you serve? 4 12/10/14 Mission Statement 5 Your mission statement should include: Purpose: What is the end result – a change in status, like to improve or to enhance. Business: What is the primary means used to accomplish that purpose – such as, to provide or a link, by or through. 5 12/10/14 6 The Parks and Recreation Department’s mission is to enhance the community’s quality of life by providing well-designed and properly maintained parks and recreational opportunities for all citizens. It is compelling It challenges and inspires staff to stretch their capacities to achieve their purpose It focuses first on the customers to be served or impacted It describes what the department will look like when functioning effectively 9 12/10/14 10 Meridian is a vibrant community whose vision is to be the premier city to live, work and raise a family. Meridian Parks and Recreation Vision 10 12/10/14 Values 11 Definition: Values are beliefs that your department’s staff hold in common and endeavor to put into practice. 11 12/10/14 Values 12 Your values should: Guide your department’s staff in performing their work Answer the question, What are the basic beliefs that we share as a department? Well-maintained facilities. Well-run programs. Well-planned events. 14 12/10/14 Meridian Parks and Recreation Values 15 Community Research shows that Meridian’s primary demographic is young families with children; park amenities, recreation programs, and special events all need to be family-friendly. At the same time, we need to understand and respond to the needs of our growing elderly population. Special events (movie night, community block party, tree lighting, etc.) are great tools for building a sense of community and connection city-wide. 15 12/10/14 Meridian Parks and Recreation Values 16 Fun This is what it’s all about at the end of the day. Providing opportunities for: Play - Family outings - Sports; Friends - Activities. Things to do that bring the balance to work-life balance. We help build quality of life.
