email Kleiner Park Art ProposalJulius Kleiner Memorial Par Sculpture Proposal by: J. Amber Conger REFINERII PO Box 3531 Nampa, ID 83653 (208) 861-7515 www.refinerii.com email: refinerii@yahoo.com Over -View 3 sculptures located at key points throughout the park; to serve as guideposts for visitors --helping to lead them through the park & encourage exploration. One to be located near the band - shell, one near the library & senior center, & one in the labyrinth. Each to be of similar theme, but unique & individual. Proposed Design Standing around 50 feet tall, the sculpture(s) will be built out of plate steel, with accents of white powder -coated steel & feature a vertical axis wind turbine that will gener- ate power for the park. The design & materials represent strength, integrity, & the spirit of a true American jour- ney. The white flowing lines are the path of a lifetime spent overcom- ing obstacles & envi- sioning the possibilities of the future. The sup- port struts on the sides of the steel structure speak of community support & involvement: adding strength of character & pushing upwards toward a better tomorrow... The wind turbine is also a nod to creating a better future; not only adding movement to the piece, but helping to offset some of the electricity used by the park. The proposed turbines are designed specifically to work well in urban environments; working well with very little wind or strong gusts. They are virtually noiseless & safe for birds. The sculptural form of the helix design compliments the sculpture well, & the motion adds another dimension to the artwork. I chose white as the accent color both for elegance & visibility; the sculptures will be viewed at great distances across the park & the bright white will contrast against both the sky & the greenery of the park. The steel will patina over time to a rich, rust coloured finish. The joining bolts will be bright silver; to contrast against the steel & add a bit of sparkle. At 50 feet tall, the scale of the artwork fits well within the context of the park. Large enough to be seen from a distance, but still elegant & airy --the tops of the sculptures will be visible above the trees & buildings: I can just imagine pulling into the parking lot & seeing these white sculptural forms spinning gracefully with the wind.... Each of the three pieces will be created from the same components, but will be unique. They will all be of the same height & will feature the wind tur- bine. The labyrinth piece will be more symmetrical; built more like a tower --I think this will make more sense visually as the center of the path- ways. The other two pieces will be version of each other --distinctly unique, but similar in form. For now, the names of the sculptures have not come to me --but as the project develops, the correct names will present themselves... The design is very open to personal interpretation. I would propose to add very little explanation in signage at the pieces; just a hint of the ideas of free- dom, integrity, & American spirit; leav- ing visitors free to find personal mean- ing within the work.
