The update creates greater uniformity across all of the City’s commissions in terms of membership and terms for commissioners, and Public notice and access when vacancies occur. 1 What is the “Effective” Date for Rules Regarding Membership and Terms? The new rules will apply to commissioner seats as each incumbent's current term ends. 2 UPDATE TO MERIDIAN CITY CODE REGARDING COMMISSIONS PRIOR CODE PRESENT CODE Title 2, Chapter 4 (P & Z) Size: P & Z – 5 members Appointment - By Mayor and approved by City Council (majority vote) Title 2, Chapter 5 (P & Z) Size: P & Z – Minimum of 3 to maximum of 9 members Appointment – By Mayor and approved by City Council (majority vote) 3 Commission Code Update (cont’d) PRIOR CODE PRESENT CODE Term Limit – 6 years Term expires - Incumbent may request reappointment Successive Terms - Infinite Term Limit-3 years Term expires - Position noticed in the paper; incumbent may reapply Successive Terms – 2 ok with majority approval; 3rd or all successive terms require unanimous approval by Council 4 Commission Code Update (cont’d) PRIOR CODE PRESENT CODE Absences – 3 consecutive unexcused absences = automatic termination (was not true for P & Z) Absences – Excused or unexcused for ½ the number of meetings held in any 12 month period = automatic termination 5 QUESTIONS? 6
