In order to ensure that the Judge approves our request for part of the Reebok settlement proceeds, I have taken the liberty to draft a revised proposal for your city. Please review it. I drafted it to meet the Court's stated requirements. You will note, for example that I have included statements that the there is no funding for the project and that you will provide quarterly reports concerning the status of the project. The latter is now being required by the Court. If you have questions, please contact me. If the revised proposal meets with your approval, please type it on your city's letter head and return it to me in the enclosed self- addressed and stamped envelope. I will attach it to the affidavit I have to submit to the Court. I have enclosed a copy of the draft affidavit for your review. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. Because we have to submit our package by the end of August, your help in returning your city's revised proposal will be greatly appreciated. Lance Al n a Office of the Attorney General P.O. Box 83720, Boise, ID 83720-0010 September 15, 1995 RECEIVED SEP 1 4 1995 MER" CITY ENO EER (208) 3344151 FAX: (208) 334-2830 LANCE SUBMITS PROPOSED DISTRIBUTION PLAN ALLOCATING $329000 IN REEBOK SETTLEMENT PROCEEDS BOISE...... Attorney General Alan G. Lance announced today that his Consumer Protection Unit has submitted to a federal court judge in New York for approval a proposal allocating $32,000.00 to projects benefiting local city parks departments. Under the proposal, eight cities will share in the money. The money represents Idaho's portion of a national settlement of price fixing claims negotiated between the New York Attorney General's Office and Reebok Corporation, a shoe manufacturer. Under the terms of the settlement, the money must be used "to improve, refurbish, renovate and/or provide athletic facilities, equipment or services." Each state's distribution plan must be approved by U.S. District Court Judge John G. Koeltl before becoming final. Attorney General Lance's proposal allocates Idaho's share in eight $4,000.00 grants as follows: • The City of Twin Falls, for use in replacing and refurbishing lights for four softball fields that the City recently acquired. • The City of Nampa, for use in building a soccer field/ baseball field combination. • The City of Lewiston, for use in constructing a community batting cage to be utilized by over 100 city youth teams. • The City of Idaho Falls, for use in purchasing an in-line hockey skating rink and an athletic paint striping machine to be used on the City's various youth and adult athletic fields. • The City of Pocatello, for use in refurbishing a soccer field, a softball field and a basketball court. • The City of Coeur d'Alene, for use in refurbishing city -owned basketball courts. • The City of Sandpoint, for use in building softball fields. • The City of Meridian, for use in purchasing and installing equipment for a fitness course in one of its parks. Attorney General Lance used the following criteria in determining the allocation of the $32,000.00: geographical distribution, whether or not the project could be completed without the funds, and whether or not the contribution would result in a lasting addition to the community. "We wanted to be sure that citizens throughout Idaho would benefit from this settlement, and that the projects funded as a result be of lasting use to the communities," Lance said. The hearing on final approf Idaho's distribution plan is scheduldWr October 13, 1995. If Idaho"s plan is approved, an order will be issue sometime after the hearing. - END - For further information, please contact Deputy Attorney General Brett T.
