The fieldwork for this investigation was conducted on 24 April 2001. 'Phis report presents the results of a subsurface soils investigation to evaluate drainage characteristics for the proposed drainage facilities for the on-site disposal of storm water. The premise for this report is as follows. Project Description: The proposed development is located within the east portion of the City of Meridian, Ada County, Idaho, and occupies a portion of the SWl/4 of Section 9, Township 3 North, Range 1 East, Boise Meridian. The proposed development consists of an approximate 72,000 square foot building with associated paving and driveways. A total of four infiltration swales are proposed for areas near the southwest and southeast comers of the structure. Each infiltration swale varies from approximately 3,000 to 3,500 square feet in area. The proposed depth of the infiltration swales is presently unknown. :l. Authorization: Authorization to perform this exploration and analysis was in the form of a verbal authorization to proceed dated 13 April 2001, from Mr. Roger Smith of Pinnacle Engineers, Inc., representing the owners. ~;;::}. ~: DESCRIPTION OF SITE -I~ Site Location: =I The proposed development is located east of the City of Meridian, northwest of the intersection of Franklin and Eagle Roads. Access to the site is gained by travelling Interstate-84 to Eagle Road (exit #46). From the exit, follow Eagle Road northward for approxidtely 0.5 mile to Franklin Road. Proceed eastward on Franklin Road for approximately ~ mile to the east end of the existing R.C. Willey development. The subject property is located on the north side of Franklin road, east of the existing R.C. Willey furniture store. The location is depicted on the attached site map plate. :1 - .. Lemhi St., Boise, ID 83709 E-Mail mti~mti-id.com 208376-4748 Fax 208 322-6515 www.mti-id.com d\ General Geology of Area: The subject site is located within the Boise Valley which is directly underlain by a thick sequence of alluvial sands and gravels typically deposited on basalt formations. These sediments are loosely named the Boise River~ravels and were deposited as river floodplain and stream overwash from the Boise River. These gravel deposits tend to have imbricated well~rounded clasts, poor sorting and crude stratification of beds of !l!; gravel and lenses of cross-bedded sand suggesting deposition in braided channels. The Boise River Gravels consist of unconsolidated clay, silt, sand, gravel, and cobbles. These gravels have been subdivided into smaller units based on their age and are exposed as distinct alluvial t~aces. Five of these terraces are well exposed in the Boise area and range in age from Middle Pleistocene to Holocene (Recent) (0 - 0.9 million years ago). The site lies on the Whitney Terrace, the second terrace above the currently defined floodplain. Geologic data published for the area indicated that bedrock is typically encountered at a depth of approximately 100Jeet beneath the soil surface (Othberg and Stanford, 1992). 'lJ ;\ II .'" The site is bounded on the north by a drainage ditch, on the west by existing commercial development, and on the south and east by agricultural/residential property. Regional drainage, if left undiverted, is t.9 the northwest toward the Boise River. Drainage within the property is generally to the north. Storm wate'i- drainage for the site is achieved primarily by percolation through the surficial silty soils. The property is likely to receive minimal off-site drainage. Vegetation at the time of the field investigation consisted of cultivated wheat and limited weeds and grasses. ,( SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS Soil and Sediment Profile: Two test pits were advanced at locations shown on the attached site plan. . These locations correspond to proposed infiltration swale locations. Because of the aerial extent of the studied parcel, the developed soil profile represents only a generalized case and variability in soils b~een test pit locations should be anticipated: " Surficial Sandy Silt (ML) - This soil was encountered at the ground surface across the site, generally consisting of brown to dark brown, stiff to very stiff, sandy silt (ML). Silty soils were found to be moist and disturbed through the upper 12 inches with some fine sand throughout. This silt 19yer was encountered to depths of3.5 to 3.8 feet within test pits. Cemented Silty Sand (SM): Silty sand was encountered in both test pits underlying surficial silt and generally consists of light brown, dry to slightly moist, very dense, silty sand with strong calcium carbonate (Caliche) cementation throughout. Silty sand (SM) was found to extended to depths of 6.1 to 6.8 feet within the test pits. CopyniGkT ~ 2000 MnmiAls T rniNG'" ~spEClioN, INC. ~:- 7446 W. Lemhi St.. Poorly graded sand (SP) was found to be slightly moist grading to saturated as the water table is approached, dense, and weakly to moderately cemented to 7.5 to 8.0 feet with six-inch minus gravel throughout. ~ ~ . " Walls of test pits were stable with the exception of some minor sloughing of poorly graded sand with gravel. Excavation through these granular soils, particularly after penetrating groundwater, will lead to an increased propensity for sloughing or caving. " SITE HYDROLOGY Groundwater: Groundwater was encountered at a depth of 13.5 feet in Test Pit 2 during this investigation. Soil moistures in both test pits were generally moist within the upper cohesive soils and dry to slightly moist within the cemented silty sand (SM). Moistures within the poorly graded sands (SP) were slightly moist to moist above the water table, and saturated below. Groundwater levels in the project vicinity are likely primarily a function of local irrigation activity; however, estimation of the extent to which groundwater levels fluctuate under seasonal influences is problematic without regular monitoring. Although no iron-staining or other " evidence of past groundwater levels were noted during the investigation, groundwater levels as shallow as " approximately 11 to 12 feet should be anticipated during irrigation season. Hydraulic Conductivity: .~ )!: Soil permeability - a measure of the ability of a liquid to move through a soil - was not tested in the field. ill this report this parameter is approximated by soil type and gradation. Of soils comprising the generalized II, soil profile for this study, the near surface sandy silt (ML) soils generally offer little permeability, with typical hydraulic conductivity values between 2 and 4 inches per hour, increasing with increasing sand content. Hydraulic conductivity values of near zero should be anticipated within the cemented silty sand (SM) because of strong calcium carbonate cementation encountered throughout this soil type. Conductivity values within the non-cemented poorly graded sand soils encountered at the base of the test pits are generally on the order of24 inches per hour or greater, although cementat~on may significantly reduce this value. RECOMMENDATIONS Visual ob~ervations suggest that native, non-cemented poorly graded sands (SP), likely to be encountered below approximate depths of 7.~ to 8.0 feet, are highly permeable and can be expected to permit rapid drainage of storm water. However, strongly cemented silty sand (SM) and moderate cementation encountered within the poorly graded sand (SP) will limit percolation rates. Removal and replacement of the cemented soils is required to ensure proper drainage. These cemented soils, coupled with the relatively high infiltration rates, will require that a filter sand, con~isting of ASTM C-33 or equivalent, be extended through the cemented soils, to approximate depths of7.5 to 8.0 feet. The filter sand should be placed in maximum 9 inch loose lifts and compacted to between 90% and 95% of the maximum dry density as determined by ASTM D 698 (Standard Proctor). Overcompaction of this material should be avoided, as the permeability will be reduced. Cop\'lliGkT. 2000 MATERWs TrniNGo& INSPECTiON, Irlc. '" 7446 W.
