HomeMy WebLinkAbout2024-11-12 West Ada School Updated/ November 12, 2024 RE: Centrepoint Apartments ALT, CUP, MDA H-2024-0019 Dear Meridian City Planners: This letter is an update from our August 2024 letter to reflect the new unit count and provide further feedback. West Ada School District has experienced significant and sustained growth in student enrollment during the last ten years. Based on current enrollment data specific to the area surrounding this proposed development, we estimate a development consisting of 0 single-family units and 239 multi-family units could house approximately 48 school aged children. Approval of this application will affect enrollments at the following schools in West Ada School District. Enrollment Capacity River Valley Elementary School 466 600* Lewis and Clark Middle School 901 1000 Centennial High School 1753 1900 *Program Capacity West Ada School District supports economic growth; however, growth fosters the need for additional school capacity. Future developments will continue to have an impact on the district’s capacity. Should a school exceed capacity, to meet the need for additional school capacity in this area one or more of the following may need to be implemented: Transporting students to an alternate school with available classrooms. Attendance area adjustments if there is availability in a nearby school. Passage of a bond to build new schools to fit the enrollment needs. Portable classrooms placed on the property. West Ada School District requests developers’ and City Council’s consideration for providing safe walkways, bike paths, and pedestrian access for our students to schools and community resources. Specific to this development, the District appreciates the southern walk path along the development. While the District does appreciate the dual turn lanes at Centerpointe and Ustick, the combined vehicular network within this development and the neighboring southern area is currently lacking, with significant congestion evident at the eastern entrances on Ustick and Eagle Road during peak traffic times. This makes the western Ustick entrance the most viable option for managing the flow of residents (including parents and school busses). Ideally, improved vehicular and pedestrian access to the south would alleviate these issues. Unfortunately, current pedestrian access to the south across Finch Lateral and Leslie Dr is nonexistent, limiting opportunities for residents and students. Establishing pedestrian pathways to River Valley Elementary and along the Finch Lateral would enhance community connectivity and better serve students residing at the corner of Ustick and Eagle, ultimately providing a more convenient and integrated experience for families. Sincerely, Miranda Carson Director of Transportation & Planning
