Hello, This is Melissa Hamilton. I live near ten mile and cherry lane. I am emailing you today about The Gateway and the 390 multi-family units that it would be bringing to our community. I am fully against adding more housing into this area of Meridian. I do not approve of the building of The Gateway at the Ten Mile and Franklin area. Chaparral Elementary school is the school that The Gateway children will be attending. This also is where my children attend. The Chaparral school capacity is 550. The Gateway could house approximately 51 school age kids. In the last few weeks we heard from the developers of The District that they approximate 53 school age kids. Just from these two new developments alone Chaparral Elementary will be past max capacity (way past). Let us do some math: At the time of this email Chaparral Elementary’s secretary Jessica Mortensen said that the school is “just under 550”. We’ll go with the number 545. 545+51+53=649 This is a huge issue. And let me point out again, my children go to chaparral. I walk their hallways weekly as a volunteer. I would argue that they are ALREADY OVER capacity. Here are some facts about the school: Occupational therapy is held in the hallway. No speech pathology office. No resource room. The PE teacher has an office in a supply closet. No computer lab. The classroom sizes are too large. Things are getting out of hand and I sincerely hope that those in charge of our city start to listen to its community. -Melissa Hamilton 1
