July 24, 2024 meeting minutes approved STAFF PROGRAM REPORT 2. Monthly Presentation: Orange Bag Program (Staff Schultz) The Orange Bag Program is used to collect hand-to-recycle plastics, such as plastic silverware or plastic bags. These bags are separated from commingle recyclables. About 60% of orange bag tonnage is transported to Utah to be incinerated in order to offset the use of coal. Information about this program is on the City website. For the first part of 2024, hefty has collected 116.25 tons of hard-to-recycle plastics. 3. Rate Status Updates (Staff Schultz) The proposed Republic rates have gone to Council and Council requested additional information from Republic. Staff are currently working with Republic on obtaining this information. The next rate meeting is scheduled for September 10th. STAKEHOLDER UPDATES [ACTION ITEM] 4. Republic Services Polymer Center Updates Rachele Klein of Republic commented that the MRF is now capturing around 240 tons a month of recyclables. Cord Stanley of Republic talked about how the MRF is scheduled to get plastic optical sorters. This will help improve the quality of plastics headed to the Solid Waste Advisory Commission Meeting – Wednesday, August 28, 2024. Page 2 of 2 All Materials presented at public meetings shall become property of the City of Meridian Polymer Center. Currently, Coca-Cola is the number one customer of the Polymer Center. Republic is hoping by 2030 to recycle around 100 million tons a year of plastic at the Center. They are hoping that soon at the Boise MRF, plastic number 5 will be accepted. ADJOURNMENT: 4:31pm
