Dear Meridian City Council, I am writing to express my strong opposition to the proposed 2024 amendment to the Timber Creek Recycling Facility agreement. As a resident of E Valensole St in Lavender Heights, I am deeply concerned about the potential impact of these changes on our community. The proposed extension of Timber Creek's operations beyond the original ten-year limit, coupled with the expansion of acceptable materials, the addition of on-site retail activities, and the removal of the truck load limit, presents significant risks that cannot be overlooked. The continued operation of Timber Creek poses several serious hazards: 1. Air Quality and Health Concerns: o Odor and Airborne Particulates: Decomposing waste produces unpleasant odors, while dust and particulates from the landfill can impact air quality and exacerbate respiratory conditions, particularly for those with asthma or other sensitivities. o Toxic Emissions: The release of methane and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the landfill contributes to air pollution, posing health risks to residents. 2. Water and Soil Contamination: o Leachate Risk: Without proper management, rainwater can filter through the waste, creating leachate— a potentially hazardous liquid that can contaminate groundwater and nearby water sources. o Soil Contamination: Chemicals from the landfill can seep into the soil, affecting local vegetation and possibly contaminating water supplies. 3. Increased Pests and Vermin: o Rodents and Insects: Landfills attract pests that can carry diseases and cause nuisances in nearby homes. o Birds: The landfill may draw large numbers of birds, contributing to noise pollution and potential disease transmission. 4. Noise and Traffic Pollution: o Operational and Traffic Noise: The constant operation of heavy machinery and increased truck traffic can lead to significant noise pollution, disrupting the peace of our community. 5. Health and Safety Risks: o Respiratory and General Health Issues: Exposure to landfill gases and airborne particles can lead to respiratory problems, headaches, and other health concerns. o Disease Transmission: The presence of pests and potential contamination increases the risk of disease in our community. 6. Negative Impact on Property Values: o Property Devaluation: Proximity to the landfill can decrease property values due to health risks and general nuisance. o Challenges in Selling Property: The landfill's proximity may deter potential buyers, making it more difficult to sell homes in the area. 7. Environmental Impact: 1 o Wildlife Disruption: The landfill disrupts local wildlife habitats, leading to displacement and harm to biodiversity. o Ecosystem Damage: Contamination and habitat disruption can have long-term detrimental effects on the local ecosystem. Given these significant concerns, I strongly urge the City Council to enforce the original ten-year operational limit and reject any amendments that would allow Timber Creek to extend its operations. The well-being of our community depends on maintaining strict oversight of such facilities. Please feel free to contact me at 408-439-4391 if you would like to discuss this matter further. Thank you for your attention to this critical issue. Sincerely, Jordan Saenz Resident of E Valensole St, Lavender Heights 2
