HomeMy WebLinkAboutDANCE PERFORMANCE PROPOSAL 2024 CROSS SECTIONS: The dance performance An evening dance performance orchestrated by gallery artist and choreographer Martha Channer with guest choreography and performances by Yurek Henson (company director)and selected dancers from the IDAHO DANCE THEATER. This will be a dance program that illustrates the show's theme in movement and sound. As an adjunct to the art exhibit this performance will also be a special addition program for Arts week in Meridian. Cross section/a definition 1.A cutting or a piece of something cut off at right angles to an axis 2. A measure of the probability of an encounter between particles such as will result in a specified effect. 3. A composite representation typifying the constituents of a thing in their relations. MISSION STATEMENT My intension is to set a piece on the dancers from the Idaho Dance Theater that best describes and illuminates our concept, Cross Sections, through the alternate medium of movement. This motional complement to the art will be reflective of the art works of Jan Long, Stephen Fisher, and Martha Channer, especially as it addresses various meanings of what Cross sections implies and how it pertains to our exhibit. This will be an abstract, contemporary dance, representation that leaves room for the viewer's personal interpretation; another layer of understanding, engagement, and relationship to the exhibit as a whole. This mini concert, will be approximately 45 minutes in length and will unfold in three "acts". Martha Channer and Idaho Dance theater will provide a combination of live and recorded music with possible vocalization and spoken word. Yurek Henson will be a featured choreographer and performer in this presentation. NOTE: I will not be performing in this presentation, but will MC and manage the technical aspects of the show. A hand-out program will be given to those who come to see the show. I would like to include whatever your committee wishes to be present in that program. This concert is free to the public and does not require any allocation of funds from the city of Meridian. Thank you for your time and consideration, Martha Channer info@marthachanner.com 619-865-7885 CURRICULUM VITAE Martha Channer www.marthachanner.com 1725 W. I have also been a dance teacher for over 30 years; specializing in contemporary dance and choreography. Language, literature, and writing:I have an on-going interest in the French language and in French literature,as well as in English and American literature; both modern and Victorian. I am currently in the process of writing two pieces of fiction that center around the world of the visual arts for both dance and painting. My articles about art and design are published in periodicals and on blog sites nationally. Art History(ancient— modern):I have spent many years incorporating my knowledge of art history into my art to ensure both formal excellence and originality.Art history teaches us what has already been done, and therefore helps to guide us into the future. Current Biographical details In addition to creating my fine art installations and paintings, I lead C14 Contemporary Arts; which has evolved from a bricks and mortar gallery into a site-specific, exhibitions presenter. We present unusual art exhibitions, performance art, installations, art lectures , and arts education classes and lectures. Dance and choreographX Martha Channer has been a Modern dance teacher, performer, and choreographer since 1988. She was nurtured in the fine arts and in many dance forms by Chicago's rich cultural scene. She has studied and performed in New York, Chicago, San Francisco and Los Angeles, and was a principal member of The Chicago Moving Company and The Concert Ensemble. She has also performed and choreographed with numerous Contemporary Dance collectives and has produced multiple group and solo concerts. From 2014- 2021 she was the lead choreographer for the Sonoma Show Girls; a vaudeville and neo-burlesque performance company that presented Broadway style dance, cabaret jazz, and other theater reviews. Biography My development as a painter has its roots in both the plastic arts and in performance art. I was nurtured by Chicago's rich cultural scene where good art and great mentors abound. I was tutored by the "Chicago school" and left with lasting impressions of such prominent Chicago artists as Bebe Krimmer, Ed Paschke, Jim Merrell, Peggy Mac Namara , Frieda Hogan, and Jim Zanzi. I was also deeply influenced by Chicago artists-in-residence such as Vito Acconci and Alwin Nikolais. After attending The school of The Art Institute of Chicago and receiving my BFA from Barat College, I concentrated on dance and choreography. I combined these explorations with prop and set design and created gallery installations for performance. My love of form, movement, and meaning is as present in my painting as it is in my choreography; dance has greatly affected the quality of gesture in my work. My Painting style, referred to as non-objective/abstract, implies modern art that is not object oriented or reality based, but is still form oriented. The work is both psychological and literary in that it describes states of consciousness. In other words, there is actual content in the work that is telling a "story" rather than just a visual statement that is art for art's sake. This is also why non-objective/abstract is my genre; like choreography, it is a pure, transcendent, and original language - one that is inherently replete with myth and magic. It is the language of the imagination that best describes our deepest reality; that place of profound integration where "the dancer becomes the dance." I work in Latex and acrylic, but achieve the visual and color effects that are typically associated with oil paints. By using multiple layers of transparencies to create depth of field, applying textural effects that produce actual depth, and creating forms that conjure subliminal associations, my technique serves the meaning of the work much as good writing serves literary content and intent. The work remains unique because I have not used what is known as the "hook", which is when an artist copies a famous artist's style either overtly or subliminally to create a sense of association with what is commonly understood as good art. I have purposely delved deeply into myself to come up with an original style, which though it may be influenced by well known artists, does not reference their work directly. This makes it more challenging and will hopefully make my small contribution to the furtherance of art history. Throughout the 1990s and up to the present painting and installations have been my major focus. I began to work large scale in 1988 when I founded a fine art mural and design company that specialized in unique art applications geared toward enhancing both interior and exterior architecture. The Company, now called MC2 The Science of Design, has since grown into a spatial design, art installation, and exhibitions design team. Thankfully, it has given me the opportunity to work with and help develop other career artists; to create a following for my art; and to continue to explore latex and acrylic, which has expanded my understanding of composition, spatial awareness, and color theory beyond any formal training. Experience is a masterful teacher. Art is a life-long commitment, which includes my on-going interest in large scale installations as well as creating paintings. My avid interest in color, movement, unique form and content, and how it relates to our unconscious perceptions,is a perpetual study that will take me many joyful years to decipher. I have chosen a medium that completely suits this visual and experiential exploration, and I am looking forward to pursuing it fully and giving my audience and collectors the inspiration and insight that they look for in original and meaningful art.
