It was asked by commissioner O’Leary if the committee thought a two-tiered busker presentation might be possible in two segments. o Buskers not requiring electricity to perform would provide their work at different locations around the area of the Amphitheatre near where and during the Chalk Art competition locations. o Following the chalk art competition. Local performers needing electricity to power instruments would be in a talent show format on the amphitheater stageover a scheduled period of time assigned to each arts group and accounting for any change-overs of equipment and artists. Voting discs and drop buckets would need to be provided for voting at both locations. The two different times of the events would provide plenty of time for commissioners to monitor, vote and tally the chalk art competition. While awarding the chalk art winners commissioners could tally the busker and talent show performances. o It was decided that E&O members would plan a walk around of the Amphitheatre area and come up with a plan to propose to the full commission as to the possible locations for Tent booths (children’s museum, etc), where, Potential Food Truck Vendors, along with locations for other events at Kleiner Park. The question was raised if we should consider changes to the art drop as participation has seemed to drop off. o Keeping it downtown as done in the past o Have artists do their drops around the amphitheater area and make it part of the Art Party. The potential of having voting for chalk art and buskers take place on-line via MAC FB page as a survey post for both events and links to the page via QR codes around the Art Party location. Classes offered during Art Week It was agreed that we should not do an improv class in ‘24. We should keep all the other classes that were offered last year. Promote the class offerings during the Art Party better We should consider doing a ‘How to View Visual Art’ class in IPG during the 2025 Art Week. Muscolo will send the flyer and information to the Watercolor Society. It will be included in the Parks and Rec newsletter and trying to get it on the TVAA newsletter was also discussed. L. Taylor said it is doubtful that the event can be promoted by TVAA because their newsletter comes out mid- month, but we should be able to get TVAA support for June/July IPG event and other such events in the future. S. Muscolo asked when volunteers should arrive to help set up the event. L. Taylor discussed her efforts to update the list of contacts of underrepresented groups and individuals that was given to the commission by Jessica Peters. L. Taylor stated that the list is up to date as possible and can be used to send out calls to artists both for Initial Point Gallery and other projects from the Arts Commission. 4. Discuss: Adding Activities for IPG Programming For Two Month Long Shows (June/July; August/September; December/January) L. Taylor opened a discussion about additional programing for two month long exhibitions at Initial Point Gallery. She stated there should probably not be additional gallery events held during the December/January show as the Arts Commission already does lots of special events for the holidays such as the Ornament drop and there is usually a lack of attendance and volunteers available during the holidays. Cassandra Schiffler has reached out to the artists for the “Unplanned Experience” show in June/July, Pete and Tyler, and they have indicated that they are interested in doing artist talks. Although the 3D artist Kyla is not interested. L. Taylor says she will work on the specifics of the artists talks.B. Bird asked when the event would be held, in the afternoon or evening on the first Tuesday in July. Cassandra indicated that it may be more convenient logistically to plan for the lunch hour. th H. Scoville and B. Bird were in favor of having the talk at the reception on the 4 of June. L. Taylor favors having the talk on the first Tuesday of July. B. Bird stated that there may be low attendance on the first week of July and that it would be better to integrate the artist talks into the reception. L. Taylor stated that it might take up too much time of the reception and that because not all the artists agreed to participate in the talk that it might not be fair to everyone. S. Muscolo suggested that the artist talks could happen at 3:30pm an hour before the reception begins. L. Taylor suggested that we don’t do the artists talks at all for the June/July show. B. Bird suggested that we do have the artists give talks during the reception but have them only give brief artist statements about their work in a more relaxed format. It was discussed that the artists talks could potentially take place at a specific time during the event (Maybe 5:30) and be shorter in length (under 15 minutes). The subcommittee agreedwith B. Bird’s suggestion. Cassandra Schiffer will contact the artists involved in the June/July show and inform them. B. Bird moves to adjourn the meeting S. C.Paulson stated if she is accepted in to this show as an artist she will not be able to volunteer at the Commission’s booth, and she will probably know around March 15. C. B. Bird stated she will be out of town during the event. B. Bird agreed with everyone’s comments about a staffed versus unstaffed booth and the two proposed projects hinge on C. Paulson being able to participate at the Commission’s booth, so maybe a focus shift is in order because there may be families that attend this event but there will be all types of people so the Commission should be there for information about the Commission and about Meridian art in general, and to share about the various Calls the Commission has out so any Commissioner could staff the booth and this would still be beneficial even if there was no art-creating element. L. Taylor volunteered to help gather supplies but will not be able to volunteer at the booth itself. L. Taylor stated she is worried about asking for volunteers outside the Commission because the average age of City of Meridian volunteers is older so may mean increased heat sensitivity, travel plans plus concerned with having volunteers with little or no art experience. L. Taylor agreed that having an informational booth would serve the Commission better than an experiential booth and would be a great way to advertise Art Week. H. Could you take a moment to give us some feedback? Also, would you respond if this deadline was extended for a few weeks? MSO – their youth symphony is not running this year, and they do not believe it will start back up again. They do have a young artist competition, but were unsure if having it open to all would disqualify them. Those performances are March 2 and May 4. The March 2 one wouldn’t work for this opportunity timeline, but the May 4 one could, so they might apply if the timeline was extended. IFAA – they had a school-wide, all-consuming performance at the Morrison Center on Reb 1, so didn’t have time to apply. They might apply if extended. Ballet Folklorico – intended to apply for a July project, but wasn’t able to get grant writing help in time. Would apply if extended. Open Arms Dance – great offer, but funding cycle and deadlines are out of alignment with projects and their season (Aug-May), which occurs during the school year. Also has 6 grants to apply for this Jan and Feb. and has to prioritize those that offer the most funds and are the least restrictive to carry out.
