HomeMy WebLinkAbout1-11-2024 Mayor Robert E. Simison City Council Members: Joe BortonJohn Overton Liz StraderJessicaPerreault Brad HoaglunLuke Cavener January 11, 2024 MEMORANDUM TO:Meridian Arts Commission FROM:Cassandra Schiffler, Arts and Culture Coordinator RE:2024 Concerts on Broadway Season Lineup and Discuss 2024 Concert Poster Illustration Art Background Staff has tentatively booked the following bands for the 2024 Concerts on Broadway Season: August 24 -Steve Fulton’s UltraMuse(the music is similar to the band playing with Steve Fulton in this videofrom the Hyde Park Street Fair) September 7 –Afrosonics http://afrosonics.com/band/ September 24 –Summer Groove Party Band https://www.thehighstreetband.com/ This season lineup would feature two bands (Steve Fulton and Afrosonics) that are primarily original music, though Steve Fulton’s UltraMuse has several covers in their lineup too. Steve Fulton is a well-known musician in the valley and nationally, and his larger band has played bigger venues. Afrosonics is a high-energy band with danceable music, and features a diverse group of musicians. Summer Groove Party Band is the former High Street Band, which has played almost every season of Concerts on Broadwayin the past, and has garnered our largest audiences in the past. Staff wouldalsolike the commission to consider the poster illustrations for this year’s concerts. We received a lot of positive feedback on Kelly Knopp’s illustration from last year. TheKelly Knopp illustration couldcontinue tobe used as branding for future concerts, though MACdid discuss having different posters that could become collectable. Recommendations To approve the lineup for the 2024 season of concerts, and give staff direction on the poster illustration for 2024. This information should help guide the committee in selecting traffic box locations for 2024. Please review the info, and bring thoughts and comments to the meeting. In addition to a discussion on the locations, staff would also like to consider whether the committee would prefer to wrap both boxes at a location with work by one artist. Budget wise, we can either do three (3) locations wrapping both boxes with the same artist’s work on both boxes, or we could do five (5) locations with one box being wrapped. Our public art map is helpful in reviewing locations that already have wrapped boxes(the yellow stars are traffic boxes): https://gis.meridiancity.org/portal/apps/storymaps/stories/c6cafcb282ee4d6980ae9aaa1a68ede8. Schiffler stated the Public Art Committee did not meet last month. C. Schiffler noted that two calls for artists are currently open: Transit Stop Shelter Public Art Call and Youth Performing Arts Projects Call. C. Schiffler requested the Commission’s assistance in spreading the word about these calls. The call for Transit Stop Shelter Public Art should receive a good response and did receive media attention; responses are due February 16. Only a few responses to the call for Youth Performing Arts projects but C . Schiffler has contacted several performing arts organizations she hopes apply; the deadline is February 2. C. Schiffler stated that the theming and identity Public Art Project at Chateau Park is a Parks and Recreation Department project but the intention is to develop a committee between the Arts Commission, three members of the Parks and Recreation Commission, some citizens, and City staff to develop the project. The Parks and Recreation Department selected artist, Ken McCall, who is on the Public Arts Roster, to create the artwork. From the Arts Commission, Parks and Rec would like to invite L. Taylor to be on the committee since she lives next to Chateau Park; B. Gaytan as the Chair of the Public Art Committee; and H. Scoville for the opportunity as a Youth Commissioner to work on this type of project. One of the challenges is the name “Chateau” since a chateau is a castle in France so will need to think of a way to theme the park around this. C. Schiffler stated that the Public Art Committee will meet next Tuesday and will discuss the Traffic Box Wrap Project locations for 2024.The City Planner has provided good feedback on possible locations and locations to avoid. C. Schiffler noted that the Discovery Park bike racks are being worked on and should be headed to powder coating soon. Still a bit of a fabrication stall on the “Fanfare” project but on track for April and signage is also in the works for this piece. C.
