Simison City Council Members: Joe Borton Liz Strader Brad Hoaglun John Overton Jessica Perreault Luke Cavener To: City of Meridian Planning and Zoning Commission Re: Farmstone Crossing Subdivision (H-2023-0045) The history of Meridian and the Egger’s farm dates back to 1918, when the Eggers purchased a dairy on Ten Mile and Overland roads. In 1921 they started a farming operation called Black Cat Farms on what used to be called Post Road. Years later Ada County renamed the road to Black Cat in honor of the ‘Black Cat’ sign that they had installed there. The Ada County Historic Sites Inventory lists the Eggers Farmstead historical significance to Meridian and to Ada County. The only remaining double silo granary in Ada County is on this farmstead. This granary and the barn are significant to both the architectural and agricultural heritage of the City of Meridian and Ada County. The City of Meridian Historical Preservation Commission believes that the double silo granary that is located on this site could offer a unique focal point to this development. We also feel that the double silo granary and the barn could offer architectural inspiration for this development. The Hidden Springs development utilizes the Schick-Otolasa farmstead as a historical and visual landmark for the development. The most recognizable commercial development that incorporates historical agricultural buildings in their development is the Magnolia Market located in Waco, Tx. This development is a great example of reusing agricultural buildings in a commercial development. The City of Meridian Historic Preservation Commission respectfully asks the Planning & Zoning Commission to have the developer incorporate the double silo granary into this development. The Historic Preservation Commission is tasked with saving our historic buildings and culture. We see a great opportunity with the proposed development to do both of these. Blaine O. Johnston President Meridian Historic Preservation Commission
