HomeMy WebLinkAbout2023-11-17 Sam Davis Dear City Council Members,
Regarding the proposed Tanner Creek Subdivision H-2022-0048:
This development raises significant apprehensions about its potential impacts on our quality of life and
the future well-being and education of our children.
Using the West Ada County District's formula for estimating student growth related to new housing
development, I present the following figures, which underscore the imminent negative consequences for
our community's future:
• 6 residential developments from around Ten Mile/Franklin and Ten Mile/Pine is expected to
introduce over 2,172 new homes within the next 1 to 3 years, contributing an estimated 400
new middle school-aged students to Meridian Middle School during that timeframe.
• Meridian Middle School's current student enrollment is 1,063,with a capacity set at 1,250.The
influx of 400 additional students within 1 to 3 years could push the school to operate at 213
student's overcapacities.
a Upon completion, the Tanner Creek Subdivision is anticipated to add approximately 75 more
students to Meridian Middle School, pushing the school well beyond capacity by 288 students.
It is crucial to recognize that while development is not the sole cause of school overcrowding, it is the
most preventable factor. To avert such overcrowding, school expansion and new construction must align
with increases in student enrollment. Regrettably, there are no imminent plans for the construction of
additional middle schools to alleviate this growing concern.
Moreover, the proposed development contradicts the current land zoning for commercial use and the
city's future zoning map designating it for mixed-use community development, not high-density
residential. I firmly believe this land is more suitable for low-density mixed-use, such as single-family
homes with low-density offices or a recreational area, preventing undue strain on our schools. High
dense apartments should not be a part of this plan.
Finally, this plan deviates from the City of Meridian's Comprehensive Plan, as it threatens to compromise
our community's character, quality of life, and sustainability. Overcrowding in schools and jeopardizing
the education of our children run counter to the values and vision we hold for our community's future.
In light of these concerns, I respectfully urge you to deny approval for the Tanner Creek Subdivision
development. Our community deserves a future that aligns with our shared values and safeguards the
well-being and education of our children.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely, '
