Hello Sonya, YES, I definitely would like this to be a part of the public record as I have been following this project for 2 years now. Thanks so much for checking with me. Attached are the people who signed the petition electronically thru change.org. There is a second file with comments. I would like my email from November to also be included. I have pasted a copy of this below. The only real change is that at the time of that email, there were 208 signers, and now there is 373. Thank you for keeping an eye on this. - Jessica Lords Meridian, ID ■□■□■ November 11th, 2022 To the Meridian City Council, Mayor, and Planning and Zoning Committee, My name is Jessica Lords and I live at 3427 N Anfield Ave in Meridian in the Woodburn neighborhood. I am writing to let you know of the concern my neighborhood has with the planned 57 Brighton Townhomes at Venable and Ustick. Venable and Ustick is an uncontrolled intersection. Per my communications with ACHD, there is a plan to determine whether or not to put in a stoplight in the next 5 years - there is a problem NOW. There are approximately 200 townhomes being built just south of Ustick at this intersection, and another 46 apartment units planned next to the Brighton units. Venable and Ustick is a very dangerous intersection for anyone turning east on Ustick. There have been several accidents here in the past year, including one involving a teenager in our neighborhood, and innumerable close calls. Per our neighborhood meeting with Brighton, they do not seem concerned about the traffic in the area, or how this will affect the local community. I have brought up this concern 3x in the last year and a half that Brighton has been planning on this development, and there has been no support from them for this concern. At the moment, Brighton is planning to have one exit on Venable very close to the already busy intersection with Ustick. This part of Venable is very busy every spring and summer as people park on the east side of the road during sports at Settlers. 57 units emptying out into the 1 same area seems like a poor idea. Even worse than this, Brighton is planning on connecting their 57 unit parking lot to our neighborhood, Woodburn, via N Buckstone. Our neighborhood is not at all interested in being connected to this sort of congestion. We have already been seeing increased crime, and we do not want to be an exit route for the 57 townhomes. Our neighborhood has an incredible amount of young children; they ride their bikes in the street, they visit one another's houses, they play all around our community. Inviting this traffic into our quiet community is inviting trouble that we do not want. More than this, the local neighborhoods (Woodburn, Sienna Creek, Baldwin Park, and Cedar Springs) are very concerned with the amount of congestion that is planned in this area. When 12 homeowners in Woodburn met virtually with Brighton, we made it very clear that we do not want to be connected via N Buckstone to this new development. The Brighton contact seemed to understand this, but mentioned how it would benefit our neighborhood to be attached to their parking lot as it would give us access to more sidewalks and the medical offices to the south of this development. As one resident, Karianna Every, expressed, "We see no benefit in that at all." We do not want this congestion next to our neighborhood. The low-income housing being planned by The Housing Company will fill a need in the community for lower priced housing. Brighton renting their own townhomes does not fill a need in the community. We, as the homeowners in the area, are more than happy to support single family homes in this space. We want community-focused development, not profit-driven congestion. Attached I have a petition against these townhomes signed by 208 homeowners in the surrounding area. I have also attached the comments left by these homeowners. https://www.change.org/stopbrightontownhomes On Wed, Jul 5, 2023, 2:42 PM Sonya Allen <sallen@meridiancity.org> wrote: Hi Jessica, I just became aware of the email you sent quite some time ago referenced below pertaining to a petition in opposition of this project. Hello, and Happy Easter! My name is Jessica Lords and I wanted to follow up on an email I sent back in November regarding Brighton's planned townhomes at Ustick and Venable. Attached I have 362 names on a petition (https://www.change.org/stopbrightontownhomes) against this build - the vast majority are Meridian residents, but some folks even asked their out of state families to sign - they feel that passionate about this issue. I also have comments attached. Not much has changed since November. I have followed this proposed development since July 2021, and have been to multiple meetings. Unfortunately I was unable to attend the meeting last month, as it was over Spring Break and Josh at Brighton refused to reschedule it to a time when more people could attend. He offered to do another meeting, but at that point, our neighborhood saw no need to continue the conversation with Brighton, but to go directly to the city. Below I have pasted my email from November. Since then we have had 2 new neighborhoods spring up next to us. The area is very congested, and we continue to experience scary situations turning east from Venable onto Ustick. 4 Please take our requests seriously and deny the conditional permit that Brighton is seeking. We do not want their congestion to be our problem - their 194 parking lots and ensuing cars connecting to our neighborhood is just horrible to think about. Thank you for your consideration. Below my name you will see my previous November email. As of today, the City does not have the development application from Brighton you reference but we do anticipate it being submitted in short order. Therefore, I am sending your correspondence and petition signatures/comments (attached) to the City Clerk so it can be part of the public record for the project. As such, your concerns will be made available to both the appointed (Planning & Zoning Commission) and elected (City Council) officials you addressed your letter to as well as City Staff as we analyze the project and make a recommendation. City Staff will evaluate this project when it is received and consider input received from our public safety team members (Fire and Police) as well as ACHD as we write a staff report. I would encourage you to stay engaged as this project moves through the public hearing entitlement process. That said, please be aware that neither the P&Z Commission nor Mayor and Council can discuss this project with you outside of the public hearing process. Benjamin MunozMeridianID83646US11/7/2022"Terrible terrible idea and location for more dense housing. Traffic there is already horrible and the townhouses across the street aren’t even up yet." Miranda CottenMeridianID83646US11/7/2022"Absolutely not ok with this. Imagine the parking lot in which Venable is going to become when these rentals don’t regulate parking. It’s already an issue with residents parking on the street and I don’t want a one lane road because of cars parked on both sides." Jessica LordsMeridianID83646US11/7/2022" yes!!!" Deborah AngelMeridianID83642US11/8/2022"This insane, poorly planned overdevelopment HAS to stop." Tyler MossMeridianID83646US11/8/2022"The city needs to limit the traffic in this area. The 196 3-story apartments across the street were supposed to be single family homes and they re-zoned it just to put them in. There was not enough space in the schools before these were approved and now they want to approve these new ones across the street…unbelievable. There will be way too much congestion in this area once they are all complete. They will probably try to show a traffic count right now that could handle the additional traffic but it won’t take into account the 196 units being built. Sad they are allowing all this to happen right in the heart of Meridian." Jeff CarrEagleID83616US11/8/2022"The density is far too gray too add any value to the overall community. Angela PetersMeridianID83646US11/8/2022"I live in Cedar Creek, and the access road to Ustick is Venible, which has no stop light and is already dangerous with the current amount of traffic. Bringing the property values down and overcrowding our roads, schools, etc." William HoffMeridianID83646US11/8/2022"I feel like the city is being irresponsible when it comes to approving permits and the city / streets cannot handle more traffic. There is still alot of contruction in process and the streets and roads need to be a priority before we encourage more people to move in."
