Greetings, I am writing in support of Pearl House/Fourth St Books. I don't live in Meridian but I drive there from Nampa two or three times a week for dinner, or to enjoy a drink with friends. I own a home and a multi-family apartment building in downtown Meridian, so I have a serious interest in the City and the businesses therein. It seems to me that Meridian has been on the cusp of developing a vibrant, walkable, downtown area for some time, and I am enthusiastically in support of more small eateries, businesses, bars, etc, to enhance the experience there. I travel all over the world and one thing I find in every such neighborhood is a small bookstore. These always add to the ambiance and charm of the neighborhoods in which they are situated and I am very confident this one would do the same. Books are getting a lot of attention lately, and it seems more popular to support reducing the book selection than increasing it, but societies thrive when their populations are educated and well-read. They also benefit from having lots of small, thriving businesses, and even more when those businesses are integrated into the neighborhoods around them. I can't think of a single reason a small bookstore like Pearl House would have any detrimental impact whatsoever on the neighborhood or the city. In fact, I believe it would have the opposite effect and draw people to Meridian where they can enjoy a diverse and friendly community. I enthusiastically support this business and I hope you will find in favor of their application. Sincerely, Steven L Gerber 1
