Dear Meridian City Council members and Mayor Simison,
My name is Dan Buffham, and I live at 3554 W. Balducci St., Meridian, Idaho 83646, with my Fiancé Debbie
Brown. I am writing to protest against the proposed Alpha Development build of multi-family homes and
apartments directly across the street from our house.
When we purchased this home in July 2019, we thoroughly checked with our realtor about the surrounding
areas that were still undeveloped. We specifically asked about the 16.6-acre property directly behind our
home, on the corner of Macmillan and Ten Mile. We were told that it was permitted as R-15 and that plans for
business offices, retail, and retirement community had been approved.
Since then, Alpha Development has purchased the property and proposed to build 235 multi-family units. As a
community, we have tried to work with Alpha Development to see if we could work together to find some
common ground. I have personally spoken at every council meeting that has been held regarding this matter
and communicated directly with Alpha Development in n effort to find common ground. Although Alpha
Development did attempt to change its proposed plan, it never deviated from the fact that it would maximize
its profit. In other words, it is still just "lipstick on a pig," so to speak.
I understand that Alpha Development is a business, but it is not a local business, nor are they an Idaho
Business, even after finding a local Venture Capital Investment Group. They still have one goal and objective,
to maximize the profit for their investors at any cost. Alpha Development has refused to listen to the residents
of Bridgetower West and the Meridian City Planning and Zoning Commission by not complying with the
request to reduce the density of their plans.
As a property owner, resident, and Chief Executive for a Global Software Consulting Firm, I understand the
importance of compromise and the need to maximize profit. However, those two things are mutually
exclusive. Therefore, they both come with sacrifice. We, as a community, have not seen where Alpha
Development has even attempted to make any sacrifice.
This area is already overdeveloped, as I am sure you are aware. There are already hundreds, if not thousands,
of single-family and Multi-family homes being developed within a five-mile radius of Bridgetower West. In a
very short time, I have seen several accidents happen at the intersection of Vincenza and Macmillan. Allowing
Alpha Development to build the proposed plan would exponentially increase the traffic and jeopardize the
safety of the children, families, and existing businesses in this area.
Meridian needs more open space and areas to spend time with our families and preserve Meridian, Idaho's
natural beauty. We do not need any more apartments or townhomes in an already congested area.
1
The bottom line is Meridian residents need employment opportunities, not apartments. Please deny this
appeal for this community, your constituents, and our way of life.
Sincere Regards,
Dan Buffham & Debbie Brown
