RE: Design Review Application A-2022-0192 for 31 E Carlton in Old Town
Dear Staff,
Thank you for the opportunity to present this application for design review. I am excited to be a
property owner in the Old Town district and I am looking forward to adding to the historic
legacy of Meridian with two anchor residential units that I would be proud to live in personally
or have any one of my family members live in.
When contemplating the design for an appropriate addition to this neighborhood, I wanted to
make it easy for residents to have more opportunities to create community. I believe the greatest
asset of this duplex can be seen in the front elevation. With a large front porch for greeting
neighbors and dining alcove immediately adjacent, most of the time spent in the home will be in
the front, facing the rest of the neighborhood. This orientation creates an opportunity for more
conversations with neighbors, even if it's just a wave through the large front windows while
sitting down for lunch.
A duplex felt like the right addition to give more people access to all Old Town has to offer
without increasing density too much to the point it feels like a crowded urban center. The duplex
will give more people access to all that Old Town already has to offer like Epi's Basque
Restaurant, Vintage '61, or any of the creative small businesses anchoring main street.
For color schematic, we chose the classic Westhighland White by Sherwin Williams for the main
body and Tricorn Black for the trim. This color combination can be seen on page two. Due to
the height requirements for new construction in Old Town we thought more neutral tones
would help these units blend in with the neighboring residents despite its height.
