Hello,
am writing to you in regards with my concerns for the development of a multifamily complex close to my current home.
My basic concern is that I I can see the development is occurring extremely fast in this area without some thoughtful input
that will help prevent unneeded stress, financial burden and excessive cost to the tax paye. While I do not claim to be an
expert city planner, I do have experience working for the Alamo area Council of Governments in the San Antonio region of
Texas as part of their workable communities program. I attended several meetings with Bexar County, the city of San
Antonio as well as the state of Texas during the early 2000's. This was a point in which the Westside of San Antonio was
developing quite quickly, just like Meridian. We quickly learned that putting in proper infrastructure such as roads,
sidewalks, biking paths, routes to school, handicap accessibility, Edwards Aquaphor considerations, etc. made this
process a lot less expensive and a lot less stressful for the community It also improved the walkable and bikeable routes
which really helped the community/health aspect of neighborhoods. One exmple of trying to combat these challenges,
was these local government's started to require development corporations donate land necessary for the schools that
would be needed for the area.
-I am concerned about the amount of traffic on McMillen, a two lane road which, I am told, cannot be easily widened. I
think larger complexes with multiple units would be best along the major arteries such as I 84, Chinden Road, in the future
Mcdermott Highway. I am already having trouble crossing this road on my children's route to school. We are trying to do
the right thing by biking to school rather than choosing to drive a car. We are actively trying to reduce traffic in our
area. It is getting to the point where I do not feel safe crossing this road with my children and we sometimes have to wait
for very long periods of time before we are able to cross to go to the pool and go to the school. Given this road connects
2 amenities within our neighborhood, it would have made sense to me that this was a requirement of the developer at the
time the neighborhood was built. I have been back-and-forth with both the highway district and the school district as to
who is responsible for building the lighted crosswalk at the location of San Vito and McMillen. I was ultimately told that is
school districts responsibilty. I have not heard of any plans from the school as to when this will be put in. From what I can
see, our school district cannot keep up with the current demand and live up to existing commitments. This is a safety
issue and one that should be taken more seriously.
-I am also concerned about the strain of the school. There are 30+ students and my son and my daughter's class at
PVE. My daughter will very likely be switching to another class after starting this year, which is very stressful and not
ideal for routine or learning. My children have never been in such large class sizes. I am surprised they are no limits as
to the number of children you can place in a classroom. The state where I grew up this limit was 22 and primary and 25
for secondary. We have been here 1 year (moved from another area of ID, I have lived in ID more than a decade), and
for the first time, 2 of my children placed behind benchmark on their end of year test. They are not getting the one-on-one
attention they need. I am having to supplement reading and writing at home and this has become very stressful for my
family; both my husband and I work full-time.
I am just asking that you put some thought and good planning before approving more development. The availability of
infrastructure and resources needs to be reconciled with this growth and it is the responsibility of her leadership to ensure
this happens.
Thank you,
Amber Bock
