RE: Calvary Chapel Treasure Valley
Design Review Narrative - Resubmission
Planning Staff:
Calvary Chapel Treasure Valley respectfully requests Design Review approval for
Phase 1 of its new church facility located in the Poiema Subdivision off Lake Hazel
Road. The project consists of a one-story, 24,985 square foot church building with 478
seat sanctuary, a 153 space parking lot, and a combination of hardscape and softscape
landscape treatments including a large patio and grass -berm amphitheater.
Cohesive Design
Although several different massing elements, materials, and colors are employed on the
Phase 1 building exterior, the features harmonize to create a unified and cohesive
architectural composition. Low slope roof planes complement the horizontal parapets of
the flat -roofed portions of the building, and dark bronze -colored doors, window frames,
sunshades, fascias, and coping metal provide a unifying thread on the predominantly
stucco, lap -siding, and stone facades.
Building Scale
Building wall and parapet heights are in appropriate proportion, not only to the scale of
the structure, but also to the scale of existing and proposed residential construction
nearby. Human scale facades are reinforced through use of appropriately sized doors,
windows, and sunshade elements; stone clad accent walls; and low projecting canopies
and entrance door alcoves.

FILENUMBER:A202-- form and massing is driven by the building's primary functional components
ear organization designed to accommodate future expansion to the west. The
focal point of Phase 1 is the taller mass and butterfly roof form of the sanctuary and
adjacent foyer / fellowship space, anchored by a 35 foot high projecting feature wall on
the north fagade. The building's form is further articulated by use of projecting roof
planes, wall plane offsets, and material and color selections.
Architectural Elements
Projecting sloped roof planes, projecting horizontal canopy roofs, and offset wall planes
accentuated by changes in material and color are the building's most prominent
architectural features. These elements are reinforced by glazed doors and dark
aluminum framed windows on each fagade, and by a large, glazed curtainwall with
horizontal bands of sunshades that provides a visual connection from the interior foyer
space to the outdoor patio and amphitheater.
Materials
Primary wall materials and colors are off-white Portland -cement stucco, wood grain /
brown color fiber cement lap siding, and taupe colored manufactured stone. Entrance
doors, windows frames, and sunshades are dark bronze anodized aluminum with
matching prefinished steel fascias and parapet coping.
Signs / Lighting
A free-standing, double -sided manufactured stone monument sign with church name
and/or logo, along with a building -mounted sign/logo above the main building entrance
are anticipated. This signage will be submitted for City review and permitting separately
from this application.
Parking lot, patio, and amphitheater lighting will be 20 to 25 foot high, pole -mounted,
cut-off type LED fixtures. A photometric plan and light fixture product data are included
with the CZC application.
Pedestrian Walkways and Facilities
Public sidewalks along all adjacent public streets are being constructed as part of the
Poiema Subdivision. Handicap accessible pedestrian connections from the main
building entrances and patio area to S. Astoria Avenue and to the grass berm
amphitheater are provided as part of the church development.
