To the City of Meridian Planning and Zoning Commission:
I am writing regarding application H-2022-0012 Mulonge Daycare-CUP, for an in-home
daycare for up to 12 children.
My family and I live on South Leaning Tower Avenue in the Normandy subdivision. In
2020 the city approved an application for an in-home daycare for up to 6 children at
4175 S. Leaning Tower Ave. Last month my neighbors and I received a notice from this
neighbor advising that they would be applying for a permit for a daycare allowing up to
12 children.
The reason for my letter is that my family and I, as well as our other neighbors, feel that
a daycare of this size is not appropriate or safe for our neighborhood. There is already an
increase in overall traffic with the daycare at its current size. Cars are parked
haphazardly in front of this home, in front of driveways, and on the wrong sides of the
street. Cars are coming and going all day long. Many of the homes in this neighborhood,
including my own, have young children who play outside, and the excess traffic creates
an unsafe environment for them. Conceivably doubling the amount of traffic coming
and going from the daycare would create a dangerous situation for the many children in
our neighborhood.
Our homes are quite close together, with minimal space between houses. The extra noise
that would be generated from a home with 12 additional children would be too much for
a quiet neighborhood the size of ours. I am not sure exactly how many people already
live in that home, but there are at least 4 or 5 cars that I see in the driveway on most
days. So that's at least 4 adults, plus the children who already live there.Add in up to 12
additional children and it would not be possible to maintain a quiet environment.
Normandy is a small, quiet subdivision. We are not located near any commercially
zoned properties, and we did not plan on purchasing homes with a loud, high-traffic
business located right on our own street. In its present state, this in-home daycare
creates excess traffic and noise. We are extremely concerned about the impact that
essentially doubling the size of this business will have on our quality of life.
I hope that you will keep our concerns in mind when considering approval of the
application H-2022-0012 Mulonge Daycare-CUP. Thank you for your time and
attention to this matter.
Sincerely,
Taryn Thompson
