Simison Treg Bernt Joe Borton Luke Brad Hoaglun Jessica Perreault Liz Strader Verticillium wilt, a disease caused by Verticillium dahliae is a soil borne fungal disease pathogen that is ever-present in many soils that commonly attacks maples, especially Norway Maple as well as many other woody plants in Meridian Soils. V. dahliae survives in the soil as clusters of thick-walled cells known as “microsclerotia.” Microsclerotia are extremely resistant to drought and cold and can survive for a decade or more as dormant propagules just waiting for exudates from a suitable host to wake them up. Then they germinate much like a normal fungus spore and infect plants through the roots. Once in the vascular system, the fungus grows up into the stem and branches, plugging the vessels as it goes and eventually causing leaf wilt and branch death. Therefore, in an effort to comply with Integrated Pest Management Best Practices, it is strongly recommended by the Meridian City Arborist that alternative genera are used for new plantings and new developments in the City of Meridian. Recommended Alternatives to Norway Maple (A. platanoides) that show resistance to V. dahliae  Betula nigra- River Birch  Carpinus betulus- European Hornbeam or/ Carpinus caroliniana American Hornbeam  Celtis occidentalis- Common Hackberry  Gingko biloba- Gingko  Gleditsia triacanthos var. inermis- Thornless Honeylocust o EXCEPT ‘Suncole’ or Sunburst®  Liquidambar styraciflua- Sweetgum  Platanus X acerifolia- London Planetree  Quercus bicolor- Swamp White Oak  Quercus muehlenbergii- Chinkapin Oak  Tilia americana/cordata/tomentosa- Linden (American, Little Leaf, or Silver)  Zelkova serrata- Japanese Zelkova Maple species that are preferred to A. platanoides  Acer miyabei- Miyabe Maple (Rugged Ridge®, State Street®) o Acer truncatum Shangtung Maple (and/or Hybrids) o Crimson Sunset® o Norwegian Sunset® o Pacific Sunset® o Urban Sunset® Matthew Perkins | City Arborist City of Meridian | Parks and Recreation 33 E.
