Verticillium wilt, a disease caused by Verticillium dahliae is a soil borne fungal disease pathogen that is
ever-present in many soils that commonly attacks maples, especially Norway Maple as well as many
other woody plants in Meridian Soils.V. dahliae survives in the soil as clusters of thick-walled cells
known as"microsclerotia."Microsclerotia are extremely resistant to drought and cold and can survive for
a decade or more as dormant propagules just waiting for exudates from a suitable host to wake them up.
Then they germinate much like a normal fungus spore and infect plants through the roots. Once in the
vascular system, the fungus grows up into the stem and branches, plugging the vessels as it goes and
eventually causing leaf wilt and branch death. Therefore, in an effort to comply with Integrated Pest
Management Best Practices, it is strongly recommended by the Meridian City Arborist that alternative
genera are used for new plantings and new developments in the City of Meridian.

The Emerald Ash Borer is a Highly Invasive Exotic species considered to be a major threat. This invasive
pest has caused massive damage, devastating Ash tree populations in the Eastern and Midwestern United
States. The Emerald Ash Borer has been tracked as far west as Colorado, and it will only be a matter of
time before the pest arrives in Idaho and the Treasure Valley.
The current inventory of the Urban Canopy in the City of Meridian is composed of greater than 15%
Fraxinus. Which does not consider trees that are on private property or Right of ways, which would
definitely be a higher percentage. Therefore,in an effort to comply with Integrated Pest Management Best
Practices,it is strongly recommended by the Meridian City Arborist that alternative genera are used for
new plantings and new developments in the City of Meridian.
