Dear Council,
I heartily object to the rezoning of the land at Amity & Hillsdale to allow for medium and high density housing. It is
utterly irresponsible to build more homes without first creating the necessary infrastructure in the area (specifically
roadways, water/irrigation, and schools).
Simply adding more families to an area does not make the city count as “family-friendly”. In fact, by packing in people
you will diminish the livability of the area. I’m from Southern California and have seen the end product of building
medium/high density housing… it’s not a pretty picture.
As I have gone door to door talking with neighbors about this proposed subdivision and rezoning, it is CLEAR that the
community does NOT want more homes here. Even the current zoning for single family homes on that plot makes local
residents grumble. They are concerned about traffic and irrigation rights. Already this summer wells have dried up, and
roads have become crowded with the influx of new homes.
But, Do you know what does excite your community? The retired couple across the street from me would love some
interconnected shaded walking paths. The teens who practice pitching in the street would love a baseball diamond or
two. The curious kids crammed in the Tiny Library would love a larger space to explore. The busy moms would love a
local coffee stop on the corner. And I’m sure the beautiful birds of prey would appreciate a few trees for perching, and
rodents left to hunt.
Building more homes on that space lacks a true understanding and vision of the needs of your community.
Can you imagine a shaded nature walk area with signs teaching school kids about the local water table, and a small pond
area to promote the local wildlife? Can you imagine some outdoor sports courts for teens to practice free throws or
baseball pitches? Can you imagine a small multi use business area on the corner with local coffee, a large library, a bank,
and a healthy sandwich shop for families to grab a quick after-school meal?
THAT is what would make Meridian a beautiful, family-friendly community! THAT is what would encompass the rugged
and locally-minded Idaho spirit! THAT is what your community needs!
Sincerely,
Kate Nordstrom
