Good morning,
I was just made aware of a possible new venue to open in Meridian. How exciting! Born and raised in Boise, ID, I would
love to see new venues for dancing in locations besides Boise. I have friends in all the surrounding cities, and line
dancing is really not our thing... Neither is drinking and driving or paying tons 'o' money for a cab. So, we end up not
supporting our local communities.
I heard and read testimony from citizens opposing The Oasis; citing crime, traffic, and drug use as their reason. I would
like to bring attention to the fact that both caffeine and alcohol are drugs. Both of which are sold at grocery stores and
available at every other "acceptable" venue/club. Discrimination against a group of people is not legal reason to shut
someone down. A person does not get to collect random "facts" and target them against a group of people they know
nothing about!
So please, if you'd allow me to enlighten you:
I have been involved in the EDM community for 2 decades. Which is very difficult to do in Idaho. Our EDM night life was
successfully squashed in the early 2000s, leaving only traditional clubs and venues standing. So I danced and celebrated
at these venues instead, where the legal drug was FLOWING- alcohol. I was sexually assaulted 3 times at these
"acceptable" venues that have been a part of the Boise nightlife for a very long time. In the last 5 years, the EDM
community has finally begun to get a foothold in a club or two in downtown Boise. These are now the only events I
attend. And since then, I have not been sexually assaulted. Do you know why that is? The EDM motto is PLUR: peace,
love, unity, and respect. Of course there are still gonna be new comers, used to the dumbed down mentalities of
traditional bars/venues. But we know how to handle them. With love and kindness. And if the inappropriate behavior
continues, we know how to address that as well. Communication and consent are the cornerstones of our fun. We have
worked too hard to create this community to let it be destroyed by ignorance. And the citizens of Meridian have
displayed quite a bit of ignorance, and in doing so, surely missed out on an opportunity to strengthen their community.
Thank you for your time :)
Sincerely,
