Councilman Cavener,
You may recall we chatted this past year about our support of the budget increase for
the police department. We continue to think they are doing a great job and should be
fully supported.
We are writing to you about the hearing on the Oasis night club, Eagle and Ustick, to be
held July 20. We plan to attend. Our written statement is already on record, but we will
try to speak that evening if that opportunity exists.
Parking is going to be a huge problem, and the consequences of lack of adequate
parking is going to be an ongoing problem. I understand that Sports Villa has already
told Oasis in writing that they do not have any parking spaces to share. Oasis does not
have enough spaces for the size crowds they hope to attract.
Overflow parking may go to the other three corners of Eagle and Ustick -- Kohl's,
Lowe's, or Trader Joe's. This is a very serious consequence. This is already a
complicated intersection. It is a dangerous crossing for pedestrians -- a McDonald's
employee was killed in the crosswalk in 2019 by a cement truck who did not see her,
even though she was crossing with the signal in her favor. There are two neon lights to
warn Ustick traffic against turning right on the red light because of accidents with Eagle
1
traffic making U-turns utilizing that right-turn lane. (And...the Oasis will encourage more
north-bound Eagle traffic to U-turn at Ustick!) The Oasis plans to do concerts and
weddings which will attract large crowds arriving and departing at about the same
time. And, after folks have been drinking, will they safely cross these busy streets,
perhaps when it's dark outside?
If overflow parking does not park at nearby businesses on the other three corners, the
next obvious option is to go 1/4 mile and park on Leslie Drive in Champion Park. Leslie
Drive already accommodates parking for youth sport teams to utilize the Champion Park
field and park, close to Ustick and Leslie. If parking for a wedding fills up street parking
on Leslie, and then sports teams arrive, where are they to park? Also, busy traffic on
Ustick has made it somewhat unsafe to do left turns from Leslie onto Ustick... we live in
Champion Park and we always drive the extra distance to utilize Troxel to access
Ustick. Champion Park really can't safely accommodate extra parking and traffic.
I am writing to you ahead of time to encourage you to drive to the intersection of Ustick
and Eagle, and imagine you are looking for parking. Watch pedestrian traffic -- the
signal lights are very long. Drive from that intersection west to Leslie and look at the
small amount of street parking (for families bringing members of two teams).
It is already difficult to enter and depart from the driveways of businesses located at this
corner, for instance leaving Trader Joe's onto Eagle, for a traffic lane other than the
right-turn lane.
Also, bottom line, is the intersection of Eagle and Ustick one that you think long term
can safely accommodate drivers who may have been drinking? Wouldn't this type
business be better located in a mall or industrial park where there is plenty of parking,
and ease of access to main roads?
We aren't sure how this idea for the location of such a nightclub has progressed this far,
but we are counting on our City Council to do the right thing for the citizens of Meridian.
Thank you so much for listening, and for your consideration of these potential problems.
