To Honorable Mayor Simison, City of Meridian City Council, and City of Meridian Planning and Zoning Commission,
The time extension for the VillaSport project has been granted and the time extension will expire April 23, 2023.
In light of this new information, I find The Oasis even more incompatible to this area in contrast to the family-friendly
VillaSport that will have children in close proximity at most hours of operation….you don’t put bars near YMCA’s, and
VillaSport is to take the usual sports club to a much higher and yet very family-oriented level. VillaSport’s liquor license
is tied into a pool and lounge atmosphere on a smaller scale than a nightclub…a few Mai-Tai’s by the pool is not a
nightclub.
When VillaSport goes forth with construction and operations as planned the MU-R designator on the Comprehensive
Plan is more than fulfilled by this huge sports facility and the mix is appropriate. To add a clashing use such as The
Oasis and one that will not be as peaceable and congruent to nearby businesses and families in homes in proximity with
2 AM closure (even with a more restricted closing time), food trucks, loitering patrons in parking lots, booming music in
the parking lots or collaterally from the nightclub bass, etc. A scientific diagram of sound waves in the application does
not convince for the mitigation of the sound impacts.
There has to be a more appropriate spot in Meridian for this business model. The applicant/investor pool has had
approximately two years to find a spot that could be suited to the needs of a late night club that would not be
overbearing in conflicts to surrounding homes and businesses. The Oasis showed up in Colliers Ads in 2019. The
developers of Wadsworth Subdivision knew of The Oasis and did not disclose it publicly or to Planning and Zoning
Commission or the City Council in recent applications.
Please deny this CUP application, but perhaps make an allowance for the applicant to be able to come forth in the
near future if a more compatible and less conflicted pad is potentially feasible for the business model. The discussion
of the P and Z Commissioners stated that perhaps downtown, The Village, or the newest Ten Mile plan might be better
suited. Yes, most of the Eagle corridor is commercial for several miles, but residents in homes are always close by and
eclipse the number of commercial pads with thousands of homes. To summarize Commissioner Cassinelli’s comments,
this seems like a square peg in a round hole. I feel this location stymies the applicants’ ability to grow and be flexible for
events and there will always be conflicts to surrounding uses. There has to be a plan B or C here for the location of this
business model.
Sincerely,
Malissa Bernard
