Dear Representative, It is my understanding that tonight at 6pm there will be a discussion of the final permit for The Oasis Dance and Event Center in Meridian (H-2021-0004). Unfortunately, my husband and I will be unable to attend. However, we give our SUPPORT/YES for this center. I’ve heard that some Meridian residents believe this center will increase crime. We totally disagree. Crime is already increasing in the Treasure Valley, and we believe it is a result of the influx of people moving here, especially from other states. As an avid social dancer for 18 years, I have NEVER seen crime associated with dancing that is affiliated with organized dance clubs. (I assume that the venue would be actively utilized by the clubs to which I belong, and others.) Also, social dancers are known for NOT consuming alcohol while dancing. In addition, I believe The Oasis would attract less crime (if any) than what might take place at public bars or restaurants that have dancing, e.g. The Buffalo Club and others. I have occasionally attended those venues and always felt safe, even though alcohol is served there. It is also my understanding that The Oasis could be rented out for weddings and other events. “Crime” certainly does NOT come to my mind when I think of weddings, bar mitzvahs, etc. Lastly, my husband is a retired deputy of the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department. As a resident of Meridian, he monitors crime statistics here and for the Treasure Valley. In his “law enforcement” opinion, he does NOT believe this venue will be a catalyst for increased crime. Thank you for allowing me to “speak” via email.
