Hello,
Please see my concerns/feedback below. Can this information be share with members who are making
decisions on this project?
My family and I live in a subdivision that is within walking distance of the “The Oasis Meridian”. I am a proponent of
development in our area. However, I am extremely concerned about the negative impact this event
center/lounge/nightclub will have on the surrounding area/neighborhoods (Eagle Rd & Ustick). As a result, I am opposed
to “The Oasis Meridian” opening in its current location. A venue of this nature would be better suited in a downtown
district or a location closer to the freeway.
My concerns toward opening this venue in its current location include noise levels, increased pedestrian and motor
vehicle traffic later into the night, insufficient parking capacity (based on current plans) causing overflow into nearby
businesses and neighborhoods, pedestrian and motorists under the influence of alcohol and/or controlled substances
entering our neighborhoods, and increased mischievous/criminal activity.
According to the oasis Meridian website “Our primary music focus during lounge and nightclub hours is within the EDM
genre”.
Scholarly articles show that EDM club attendees engage in a higher amount of risk behaviors. Including, drug use, driving
under the influence of drugs and alcohol (Degenhardt, Dillon, Duff and Ross 2006; Duff and Rowland 2006; Furr-Holden,
Voas, Kelley-Baker, and Miller 2006), poly-substance abuse (Barrett, Gross, Garand and Pihl 2005; Miller, Furr-Holden,
Voas and Bright 2005), prescription narcotics use (Kurtz, Inicardi, and Surrat 2005), and increased sexual promiscuity,
rape and sexual victimization (Fidler, Dhillon, Gertner, and Burroughs 1996; McElrath 2005; Novoa, Ompad, Wu, Vlahov
and Galea 2005; Sterk, Theall, and Elifson 2006 Moore and Valverde 2000; RAIIN 2001)
Per another article, reports of powder cocaine, LSD, ketamine, and GHB are becoming more prevalent among EDM
attendees.Between 2016 and 2019, prevalence of ketamine use increased from 5.9% to 15.3%. LSD use increased from
9.9% to 16.6% and cocaine use increased from 17.3% to 35.2%. Use of >3 drugs increased from 12.7% to 20.5% and use
of unknown powders decreased. (Palamar, Cleland 2019)
